Re: This is just SAD

I had gotton to my boat only just yesterday only to find the cover supports collapsed, we got so much snow accumulation that getting in and out of the drive was a constant battle, not all of us have snowplows and backhoes. I was to the point I couldn't keep up any longer.

wow , people!! do you get mad when you see a dirty car drive down the road??

how about a poorly kept house??

how about when you see a barn leaning over from age....you want to yell at the owner?

I fully understand about your thoughts on taking care of your own possessions, but you have no business in other peoples vehicles or possessions...

what about racing??? boats are destroyed in racing events all the time... wrecked beat up, rendered useless... all for fun!!!

get you mad?

anyway.... just another view

Dirty cars no...Dirty house ( if i know the person ) yes I will say something. I think what you fail to realize is that alot of us work hard to keep our houses, cars and boats clean, well kept and maintained. Some of us more than others, It comes down to pride for me because I have been boating since I was born. But when you see somebody that doesn't even care about his boat, that makes some of us, maybe upset alittle, but not mad.

I just think if you are going to spend alot of money on something, take care of it. I do with everything I own.

Lifes too short to worry about how others treat their stuff.
Here at Iboats we account for about a bucket of water out of a sinking boat.
If we didn't take care of out boats we probably wouldn't be having this discussion, like the owner of that capri I'll bet he has no clue just like many many others.

I respect CYA (cover your azz), really I do. But if that boat was about to go under would you try and save it??????
From what I understand if you guys in the US sneeze in the wrong direction you will be sued for something.

Re: This is just SAD

Here's another point of view......and this goes for boats, cars, houses and whatever.

It's a GOOD thing that there are those among us that are juast plain slobs. They buy something, trash it then go buy a new one. That keeps the boat companies in business building new ones, it keeps workers working, etc. Every new boat generates a certain amount of sales taxes as well.

If everybody took pristine care of their boat and kept it for 30 years, then the boat companies would soon go out of business. There would be few used boats for those that couldn't afford a new one.

Think about it.

Was at the marina this morning and got my rig all cleaned off. The Bayliner still hasn't been touched. I did, however, check the circuit breaker that his extension cord is running to (it was not tripped).
I took this one from the bow of my boat about 2 hours ago. Doesn't even look like a bowrider.
Sittin' a little low IMO.

]

It is a bit low, on mine the bow eye sits above the water when in the slip and nobody/nothing is loaded on it.

Arks implied that he would do something if the boat was in imminent danger of sinking- AND said that he'd already done that once.

Good Samaritan laws protect people who intervene to help other people. If I pull a crash victim from a burning car, but cause that person additional physical damage in the process I should not be held liable for that. Logic says that I acted to save that person's life.

Far as I know those laws do not apply to protecting another person's property. If Arks boards that boat to shovel it out and breaks the windshield, he'll probably be held responsible for that. I'd be careful about boarding it, too. It's hardly a life or death situation.

I did. But actually volume replacements of consumer items hurts the marketplace, and ultimately the end user consumer. Frequently replaced items are made so cheaply that they are not a good value once their planned obsolescence is complete.

Take a VW Beetle from the 60's. You had to maintain and service it, but it was nearly permanently rebuildable. These days, car care reaches a point where the repairs exceed sound financial limits; you can't afford to keep repairing it at some point.

Too few things are made these days that will even make it 30 years.

Re: ethanol has humbled them?

Ethanol-caused problems affect the people who used to negelct boats but they would still run.

Before ethanol, gasoline didn't go bad on you after 2 months and didn't dissolve your tank, seals, hoses, etc. People could leave a half tank of gas in the boat, untreated, leave it sit through the winter, fire it up in the spring. Then they could use the boat once every 6-8 weeks with no problem (from the fuel). So the neglected boats ran almost as well as the maintained ones.
Now, with ethanol and phase separation, their boats won't start. They have to learn maintenance (after rebuilding the carbs) or they get frustrated with boating and leave them sitting "until they get around to getting it fixed." Which is never.

Even the ones that are covered and on a lift or trailer, are used so seldom, that with ethanol become unreliable if they start at all, where as before, they were fine. Long ago I'd pull out my dad's old Whaler (from the garage, thank you) and that 1964 18 fastwin would start on a couple of pulls after not being run for two years, on the gas that had been sitting in the tank since the last use. Can't do that any more.

I know a guy with a nice Grady; couldn't get it to run after neglecting it (due, I 'm sure, to bad fuel) so it sat even more; his children weren't around much anymore and didn't want to use it when they were since it was sucha pain. So it sat, month after month, in the water, growing barnacles. Had he cared fro his fuel, it probably would have worked, giving him adn his children incentive to take care of the rest.

This is the kinda guy that deserves to pay a mechanic a $100.00 dollars a hour. This is one reason our marina don't allow boats to be stored in the water during the winter.

Just for fun, you could start driving around and look at boats in peoples driveways or in storage lots. See which ones are uncovered or parked bow down and look at the jacks. Come back every few weeks and see which jacks now have wheels bent over and collapsed from the added water weight. Then wait until the start of summer and see which ones of those have "for sale" signs on them.

Allmost like time lapse photography of an old barn collapsing!
