Hi all. I have set up a little website so I can show you all my boat. This is the address.<br /><br /> URL removed - no longer available<br /><br />Currently I have an issue with my engine in that it isn't revving over about 900rpm. Its running very roughly. I suspect its running on one cylinder. I have only just cleaned the carb but didn't soak it. I have removed and pulled apart and might consider getting a kit for it. I left it to saok over night and will attempt to blow it out with compressed air. The spark plugs were very wet, might that indicate flooding? Any how they look old so I'm replacing them. They are champion l-7j. Are they suited to a 1975 40hp evinrude?<br />It started ok (while warm haven't tried cold since the problem occurred). Idled OK but seemed very rough under load. That is what lead me to think it was running on one cylinder. But both were clean but wet. <br />Cheers<br />Joe

Welcome aboard and my book shows that the 1975 40 should have a champion plug UL81C gaped at 30<br />I would pull carbs and soak them and blow it out with compressed air.<br /> It is really worthwhile to put a kit in them at least a new needle and seat.<br />BTW that is a neat boat

Nice Boat Joe<br /><br />This 40HP has points and condensers in ignition as far as I remember. I would start by checking spark. Put a nail og screw in the spark plug caps one at a time, hold it with a dry couth, with the end 5/16" from ground, and make someone pull start a couple of times. Will both spark with strong blue spark, equally ? If they do, you have a carb problem, compression problem or reed problem to deal with. Post back.

soaked carb for 48 hours, didn't have any compressed air but blew what I could with lips. (Boy I hate the taste of fuel. Replaced spark plugs, set to about 30 thou or .8mm. Leads and other wise look OK. had a good look under flywheel to see what was happening. There is a little stickyness when decellerating, but not a problem in a boat as its not like a car. Rev idle screw... not sure about that. Got it running but it seems like a fluke. I wound it all the way in then about 1 and 3/4 turns back out. Engine seemed happiest at idle. Still though the new plugs seemed to make the difference. It roared to life when it started on second pull. So will take it out for run tomorrow morning. Wont stray so far from shore this time. <br />Cheers to all who've helped. Incidently I priced a carb kit for a 1975 40hp 40505. $39aud. Thought this was very good value. So that would be about $20 to 22 US. How is that for value.<br />Joe

Joe that is about right for the price on the kits<br /><br />keep trying and you will get it smooth running. I am running several old girls like that
