...Which is one of the main arteries into Chicago, I saw something that made me blink a few times. It was morning rush hour. The woman in the suv in the lane to my right was:

1. Holding a cellphone jammed between her left ear and her left shoulder.
2. Holding a pen in her right hand.
3. Holding a pad in her left hand.
4. Guiding the steering wheel with her left wrist.
5. Taking notes of some kind while she drove.

IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AT 70 MILES PER HOUR...!

No wonder they make me wear my seat belt!

And that is why we have a law in place now that forbids texting or using a cell phone while driving unless you have a hands free device. (blue tooth)

That's exactly why I'm glad I left my home town of Chicago 34 yrs. ago and moved to the "country". :D

I presume you take the tollway (I-294) to the Edens. Remember before I-Pass when all that bumper to bumper traffic going 75 mph had to come to screeching halt at every toll booth?

Playing Devil's advocate, many companies now simply assume, that their employees just work 24/7/365.

Whether they are sound asleep at home, in the middle of church, at a child's play, or flying in freeway traffic, if they need you to do something - they need you to do it NOW! Whe I was an IT slave, I was constantly on "emergency" conference calls, no matter where the location.

Sure they could pull over to the side of the road, but that is dangerous also and that would put them a little later for work. :(

They don't call it a rat race for nothing.

It still stunk even with i-pass, until IL installed "open road tolling", where you don't even slow down. Night and day difference. Wonderful. ;)

Any toll road that accepts some type of "pass" and does not utilize open road readers, is just plain criminal, IMO, for creating unnessary congestion and wasting resources..

Some studies say that bluetooth is just as bad . The truth is that anything that distracts you from driving is a distraction. Talking on the phone, texting, smoking, eating, fighting with the kids or wife/husband, reading a map or GPS, all take your'e mind off driving and traffic.

What a horrible company she must work for.

I used to do field service work for my current employer. If anybody of any authority called you on the phone the first question was usually:

"You're not driving right now are you?" If you were, you pulled over and THEN talked. You get caught on the phone while driving and you're not in the act of pulling over, your a hairs breath away from loosing your job.

Some companies really do give more than lip service to safety...
