here's the senario, boat and motor purchased along with, came spare parts to motor here's what we got. I have complete motor with # 4555 and well pretty much everything but engine to 5553 now the #'s im pretty sure are right but hey Ive been through this already and i know that it's 45hp and 55hp 1967-69 chrysler but I believe that the 55hp engine was swapped with 45 lower but how can anyone be sure, the previous owner had gotten the boat the same way and decided not to go through with fixin the boat so he sold it, he doesn't know and the owner before him is dead i think :( , so where to go from here, by the way there are very few numbers on engine pieces and none on the head, that I saw anyway, one more strange thing, the #'s say that neither motor should have a altenator but the 55 hood says alternator right on it, the engine doesn't appear to have it could the hood have been a junkyard buy too. the info i got on the #'s were from repair manual from library and it states that to have alt it would have a "h" in the model # or something like that please help

No models proir to 1970 had letters in the model #. Your 45 hp model# 4555 is a 1969 Electric start. No alt. This means you charge the starting batt from an outside sorce. As far as mod# 5553 I don't have it listed. I do have 5552 a 1968 and 5554 a 1969. neither of these has electric start or an Alt. I get this info from an OEM year model guide. Now there is no gaurentee it is 100% correct either. They make mistakes and omissions as well as anyone. Models with Alt. will use batt/point ignit. they will have external ignition coil mounted to the side of the block, they will also have a rectifier ( a square finned thing) mounted somewhere. All other models of these years will use a magnito ignition. The ignit. coils will be under the flywheel. Are you so confused yet? Total kudos for takin the trip to the library for a book. Do some more reading and studing. Between that and help from the guys on the board, we should be able to sort this out as good as necessary.

Re: this one will stump ya

alcan thanks for reply I walked out to verify those #'s and it is model 5553 serial 3338 if that helps and it is definitly magnito ign. coils are under flywheel and i don't see a rectifier and when you say electric i assume you mean with key and starter well this has it so ya think its the 45 but then again that book showed 5553 as being non alt. so were still at square one I guess, and if its the 45 why the spare parts thier all still there, hood and every thing and the 55 lower has a busted "collar"? behind the prop<br />Im going to go back and get that book again or just buy one, but as i recall it told of no other differences between the 45 and 55 that i could see from outside. I could tear it down and measure piston and bore but Im NOT gonna do that  ps i have spare flywheel and it has 1 large magnet I assume for the coils the same as the one on there but remeber the hood it says alt. help

There is really no way to tell which power head is on there, or combination of power heads and parts. A bonnet is a bonnet so long as it fits. badging on them means little at this point. All though it is nice to know exactly what size motor you have, I feel it makes very little difference if any at this point. Go ahead and tune this mess up and see if it will run. If so great.

If you remove the intake port cover on either cylinder, you'll be able to see the side of the piston. If I'm not mistaken, the 55 will have a hole in the side of the piston, the 45 won't.
