hey clanton, i must say that your knowledge of the force tilt and trim system has been a big help to me.

so i bought a used 89 85hp force. it took me a while but i got her going. then the tilt/trim was a problem. i messed with it for about 8 hours until i finally opened up the tilt cylinder and found that one of the ports going through the piston was wide open. the spring was mangled and the ball bearing was worn bad. so i decided to simply weld the hole shut. i put it back together and everything works great. this was the first time i had seen any movement from the rams. i changed the seals in the check valves with the tecumseh ones you suggested and now it even stays up.

so my question to you is this.... now that i have welded shut this port on the tilt piston, do i loose my protection from hitting a rock? the hole i welded is the one by itself. their are 2 holes going the other way with the bearings on the same side. this one would be the one with the single bearing on its side.

thankyou sir for all your help i have found on this great site.

Hey--I'm not Clanton but maybe I'll do. The single ball check valve you welded should be on the bottom of the piston. Its purpose is to cushion the engine return after kicking up from hitting something. The two ball check valves are on top of the piston and they allow more oil to pass for a faster kick-up in the event you hit something.

What may happen with the single valve welded shut is if you do kick up the engine, it will not return down without powering it down. So: the engine is going to be out of the water and over-revving until you react. Just make it a practice not to hit anything or do jumps like in James Bond.

However, on the plus side, you will now be able to power to more than about 1500 RPM with the engine tilted and it will not be pushed back down as is normal if you exceed this RPM in tilt.

thankyou for your responce. thats what i figured but i was not too sure. i guess i better watch my speed when tilted up so as not to bend the tilt piston arm. thanks again. much appreciated
