I'm toying with the idea of a Briggs & Stratton type boat powerplant. I saw an ad in the back of National Fisherman for plans on marinizing one, gearbox, etc. Anyone here actually done one? I'm also eyeing a 5 hp Briggs vertical shaft I have in the garage stored next to an old lower unit from an air-cooled Gamefisher. Ideas for a driveshaft coupler for the two? Must be the cold weather gettin' to me........ :D

Down here in Cajun country, where the locals eat anything that moves and alot of what doesn't, we have a lot of marsh areas where you just can't get an outboard. Folks go to these spots to duck hunt and chase red fish that will jerk you out of the boat. To get to these spots, we came up with somethin' called a GO-DEVIL, which mates an air-cooled horizontal shaft engine to an output shaft about 6 feet long wiht a machined aluminum prop. I have seen flat boats run in 4" of water. Want to see a picture?

AYEEE!

Case

Those things are all over the Orient, from Nam to Hong Kong. I have even seen them powered by Ford flat head V8s. They will run in less water than it takes to float a kayak.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I have actually seen the Go-Devil, and it is a neat rig. I do have a the Briggs and a Sears air-cooled outboard minus powerhead that should be somewhat simple to rig up. What I was wondering about was an inboard-type application. It must be the fumes from my kerosene heater in the shop, but it sounds like fun.

If you get an B&S with vertically shaft and build a waterpump underneath, you will ride with a jet-drive. It is an idea I thought about myself - maybee you are the one to realize.

Gents...

Maybe Dennis Weaver will loan you his air boat he buzzed around in on "Gentle Ben"...

Besides getting you around easily in shallow water...that boat would easily fly your grand kids kite during duldrums...or keep you quite cool when the AC fails during a power shortage. Ya gotta think outside the box folks!!!
