Thottle will not disengage w/button

[1994 5.0LMercuryAlphaOne]

I have a 94 5.0L with Alpha One. I can not get the button to push in to allow me to advance throttle without it being in gear. Just last week this was fine. I have giggled the handle to try to allow button to be pushed in. No luck.
Suggestions please.

Basically, you need to either repair or replace the control. Hard to say how to fix it without knowing which one you have.

How can I determine which model this is?
All I know presently is that it is all black with trim button on side at thumb and trailer trim up at lower aft location. I don't recall seeing any numbers on the control.

I went out to take picture. Popped off covers. Played with forward/reverse.
Now button depresses all the way in and operates properly. I don't get it.
Now I'm having difficulty popping cover plates back on. Looks like top goes on first. It has a slot forward of handle that lower cover snaps into. I don't want to break these. Can someone tell me how to reinstall. This is the Quicksilver 3000 model.

Great stuff. I can now put back together what I disassembled. I'll also lubricate it while I'm at it. Need to acquire some Loctite for assembling.

I removed the handle and found the bushing partially broken. About 1/4 inch missing. The friction screw was cross threaded partially into the bezel. The screw is actually a hex drive screw about 1/8 inch long. The picture shows a screw driver being used and a longer screw. I wonder if this has been substituted?
I put it all back together. I'm concerned I may not have positioned the handle in neutral. Is there a way to test this without putting the boat in the water?
If I can spin the prop is the boat in neutral?
Can I buy a new bushing?

If you can turn it both directions without it clicking on anything, yea, that's neutral.

Find the parts you need, print off the sheets from the manual that show the parts and head to your nearest Merc dealer. The parts are available.
