Thoughts on 1989 Merc 40 HP

Hello all, I am considering buying a used, but in very good condition,1989 pontoon boat 20'er, which comes with a 89' Merc 40HP outboard(1989). Does anyone have any thoughts on this motor(Reliability, ECT). I have only for the most part, dealt with OMC products in the past, so that is all I am familiar with. Also, would this be enough power for this boat and what speeds can I expect? I don't have any details on the motor itself, but the boat has 22" round logs and appears to be in good shape. The max. rating for the boat is 75HP and I do have a 1990 Johnson 70 HP on my current pontoon, that was rebuilt last year. I am thinking of putting the Johnson on there in time, but for now I would just run the Merc! Any thoughts on the Motor would be appreciated! Thanks, Rick

rickdb1boat,<br />I used to have an 86 Merc 40hp and I loved the engine. Reliability was exceptional. As long as the compression is good and the lowerunit seals dont leak, I'd say it'd be a pretty safe bet. As for the speed...It wont make you fly across the lake, but you may be able to pull a child skier with it. Remember, since pontoons dont plane, the theory of adding horsepower doesn't apply. They will only go so fast! I'd say, go for it and give it a try. If you dont like the speed, then switch the engine. If you are buying it used, see if the previous owner will take you for a test drive. That is the best way to determine whether the engine has enough power for you, as well as the condition of the engine. (Engines always respond differently when under load than they do in the driveway with the muffs on).<br /><br />Nav

Hi Rick, As fas as I'm concerned that Merc 40 is a great motor. Pulling a skier with it on a 20' pontoon boat will be about impossible. A tube and maybe a knee board is about as about you will be able to do. That 40 will be great for just easing around on the lake with a lot less fuel usage.<br /> Good luck with the pontoon boat.
