I'm about to go look at a Duroboat with an Evinrude 28SPL. I think it's from the late 80s. It sat for 5 years or so, but the seller says he's had it all gone through, to the tune of
$1300. I'll want to see that invoice of course. I would much prefer a not-so-ancient 4-stroke. Whaddaya think: is this motor too much of a risk? Asking price is $5800 for a 15 footer with factory console. Nice boat, but I don't want to be on the hook for a big $$$ repower in a couple of years.

The 28 SPL is the same as the 25 / 30 HP motors that were marketed for many years.------They do have the older ( easier to repair ) midsection and lower unit used in the early 1980's.-----Nothing wrong with this design------You need to maintain and operate it properly.
