Re: thoughts on Jet drive boats

there are a few inherent dangers to the jet drives although none as obvious as a propeller strike. long hair or dangling stuff from swimmers can get pulled in the intake grate. it also hurts like heck to get blasted by the output of the jet drive. obviously these are small and rare, but should be considered.

There isn't any comparison as to which is the most 'high maintenance' between an I/O and a jet drive...I have both, and the jet drive is pretty much just 'gas and go'.

As for drivability: the jet drive has a definite learning curve, and all of your instincts in an emergency maneuver have to be relearned (there isn't any steering when you throttle down)...but once you have that down, you can get yourself out of just about anything, especially one that requires a really sharp turn.

There are places here in the Panhandle that I used to take the jet drive in without ever giving it a thought...now I find myself 'land locked' with the Alpha Gen II. One river in particular that I used to 'own', is now totally off-limits.

Fun factor? Jet drive gets a 10...I/O gets a generous 7.

Happy boating!
