Thoughts on my outboard decal idea?

This is probably considered an engine topic, but I'm more looking for opinions, ideas and input. (edit: yes definitively an engine topic. mods, please move?)

I have been feeling patriotic the past few weeks while 're-doing' my 197x 6HP Johnson outboard. I have been going to the local boat shops and have been seeing nothing but Yamaha and Honda outboards being replaced by what was one a Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

So I was thinking, what happened to all of our American products?
(one guy explained to me that the Yamaha's used ford engine blocks and cranks anyway...) But that is besides the point.

And now comes the time to repaint the hood
So I printed this out on some 8x11 paper and trimmed to size:

I kind of like it, I would prefer it to say Johnson, but I haven't found that image yet.

the decals are available new ($200+ and way too big) and on ebay (home printed, and still to big) So I thought this is something my inkjet could do!

So, do you guys (and/or galls) like the idea? if not, any other ideas?
how would I go about getting some sort of water-proof paper sticker to print it on and apply to my hood? ...airbrushing is not an option, as I cannot draw an outline onto it, or even draw a straight line for the life of me.

Looks cool. Take the design to a sign shop and have them print it on the vinyl that that they use to wrap vehicles.

What you want is waterslide decal paper.

It is available on the net and on ebay.

Clear decal material, on a paper carrier.

You print it on your inkjet printer, wet it and slide it into position.

Takes a little practice to get it down, but well worth it.

Real old fashion decals ( not stickers).

i have 10ish sheets of the Rub-On Decal Transfer Film, its ok. not too happy with it.

I'm familiar with the water slide from working on my models as a kid. I'm kinda liking the vinyl car covering idea though...

the reason you can not find Johnson. BRP has dropped the Johnson line, and pushing the etec's. 1998 i believe was the last of the Johnsons. sure seems like a dumb move to me.

IMO opinion any "patriotic" idea is a good one! We need more people who think like you! Good luck.

Daryll at Iguana is top notch!!!! He does a TON of boat, motor, etc graphics. You tell him what you want...and he will work himself silly making it what you want! He has done graphics for my boat...our Rescue organization.
He is just top notch!

LOOK: You have a computer. The computer has PAINT and GRAPHICS built in programs. You can do anything you want, save to disc and bring the disc to an auto decal print shop. There is at least one in every city. A 16 X 20 inch decal in mirror image (left and right hand--some of these people do not understand mirror image) costs me 37 dollars each decal. Press-apply decal, guaranteed for at least 5-7 years.

I agree a sticker shop will do a better job than you can at home, the difference is they use ARCHIVAl inks 100 year life etc...wont fade like your home inkject inks will

I like it!! I do agree with you though, I would like to see it say Johnson. I have an old 72 Johnson 70 hp I'd like to see that on!!

A professional could easily make it say JOHNSON in that exact font and script.
I vote for JOHNNYRUDE.

I drove by a kinkos today, hey has a big banner up saying "we make banners, decals, vinyl lettering..." I don't remember exactly, but it was something along those lines. I'll give that a shot when the time comes. I still need to try and find some weather-stripping for it. Hood has a while to go, I still have to sand, primer, wet sand, and paint, with more steps in between.

My friends who don't support my boating hobby, even say "That is one NICE looking motor" and "That thing looks brand new!" So that makes me feel confident about my craftsmanship.

But all the thanks has to go to my sand blaster, and 50 pounds of sand.

You logo idea looks great!

A small point though, OMC was bought by Bombardier, a Canadian company, and before OMC went under their outboards (at least the ones I used) were built in Mexico.
