Re: Thoughts on this trailer

I am most certainly NOT kidding or trying to be funny or rude...... straight, factual, and nothing but friendly

ok so maybe you really don't know, don't go to wiki anymore as I think it is just confusing you, technically all mainstream welding is a form of arc, but when people say arc welding they mean stick or SMAW. I thought you were just trying to smart in saying that all welding is technically a form of arc

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

Indeed I DID read your posts.... you are INCORRECT the "three types" of welding you describe are ALL subtypes of electrical arc welding There are more forms of arc welding and there are forms of welding that do not use electricity.

Obviously we have gone WAY off topic here but I have been trying really hard to explain this to you instead of just telling you that you are wrong.....

as for the legal thing.... probably best NOT to parrot hearsay on legalities as fact..... make sure that you know before presenting it as the law....

No hard feelings here at all.

Smoke, If I thought you were wrong I would tell you, you know that and you know you can do the same in return, mutual respect is one of the things that is lost sometimes on the web but being rude and disrespectful I will not stand for especially when its directed towards someone I respect and consider my friend even though its on the internet and we have never met in the real world. One of the things I think we have all learned about the web is that everyones an expert, fortunately a persons inexperience is often exposed by their own words. Someday were going to have to hang out and work on some projects over a beer.

Heck yeah but do we build a boat or a jeep?!?

I don't have any feeling so none taken, since I don't think he is going to be buying the trailer time to just bury the thread lol
but no I am not the one in the wrong, he said he has done mig welding but wants to use an arc, with I suggested not, which you really shouldn't and I used the word MAINSTREAM for a reason, you are correct, but read my posts man. there are welders that use soundwaves, but the 3 mainstream welders are arc, mig, tig those definitely are not the proper names, but the mainstream names

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

then there's magnesium fusing, torch brazing, furnace brazing, torch welding with flux and filler, torch welding without filler, heck, a blacksmith can "weld" metal with fire and a hammer.

Fact is, you made two statements and they were both incorrect or unsubstantiated..... I agree lets move on.... btw.... tig welding IS fun... one day you may get to try that too

Wifes been all over me to build another Jeep.........

I would kinda like to build a buggie though that would be cool and I could build a tube chassis for it too!

Sorry to spark (no pun intended) the crazy welding debate. I should have used the term 'stick' instead of 'arc' to avoid confusion. Regardless I'm not buying the trailer. I'd still be very interested in any further proof that it is illegal to use a stick welder on a trailer, though.

LOL naw it's not your fault Ben.... I'm fairly certain that there is nothing illegal about "stick" welding on a frame and there is no metal on that frame that is too thin to weld with a good ole buzzbox.... That said.... a chassis or frame of any sort is probably not the place to "learn" to weld unless under the direct supervision of a qualified welder.... failure could be fatal to someone

Get one of these
http://www.homedepot.com/buy/tools-...oln-electric-ac-dc-225-125-welder-174361.html

You can find them on CL all day long for $100-$200 Greatest arc welder of all time for small- midsized jobs I have one myself and its a great value, if you don't have it I would get 220vac in your workspace/garage, its much better power for either arc or mig

once you get arc welding down and have nice beads you can pretty much do anything

My old high school welding instructor started us with 1/4"X12"X12" plate steel, half our class was laying beads on that plate of steel, after one semester our grade was 25% Bead Quality 15% thickness of the plate which for me was over 4"s thick at the end of the semester, practice practice practice....

those old (or new.... no real difference) Lincoln boxes are great. Mine is an OLD Air-co that my grandfather had. I'm guessing it's from the 60's or 70's ... gotta keep it forever just because but can't say ANYTHING bad about the Lincoln....

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

trying not to be rude here but here we go...

basically there are 3 types of welders mig/wire feed, tig, and arc. they are all very different, I use mig and arc at work but have yet to use TIG, sure wish I knew someone with one as I would love to try.

oh and I honestly don't know the legal thing but thats what I have been told by a few people, I never bothered to look into it. I know it's not a good idea on thin metals, allthough they do make adapters to so, they just don't work that great, the penetration vs heat isn't right for thin metals, the heat required produce a proper weld on thin metals penetrates too deep with an arc welder blowing holes or just not making it structurally sound. atleast that's what I got out of the few sites I just googled up lol
Better not tel that to anyone in a body shop-and better not tell any car makers either. All the cars I know of today are WELDED together,by ROBOTS no less!!! Resistance welding, and arc welding-without them you wouldn't have a vehicle.[Know what? Some boats are welded together too!!!]

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

people are missing that you MEANT stick welding and not arc in general....

there was a time that all anyone knew of was torch welding and "arc" welding and the latter being stick welding.... Since there were only two (at least for the home welder) it was simple now tig, and mig versions of arc are available so you HAVE to be more specific.... just saying "arc" doesn't cut it.....

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

the world is full of slang, most people call there wheels rims, but rims are different than wheels, but we all know what they mean, if someone says they want to borrow their friends arc welder instead on using their own mig, then we should know what he mean stick welder. no need to fight over technicalities unless you are wearing a TAPOUT shirt?? lol jk

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

I've seen notices on truck frames warning against welding or drilling the frame because it will weaken the steel. AFAIK it's a manufacturer warranty issue, not a legal issue.

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

thats just the new heat treated steel frames, I have a treated one on my truck and let me tell you, it is quite the work out drilling through it, but you know what they say, they don't build trucks like they used to lol

Good lord man.... I haven't been fighting over technicalities, I have been TRYING MY DAMNEDEST to EDUCATE YOU...... I even defended you a bit, explaining your terminology on my last post..... I give up..... call it what you want.... You THINK you are really saying something here but the PM's are flying.... SEVERAL people have been laughing at you..... You just don't get it..... STILL no hard feelings but I'm done trying to explain this to you..... Instead of really considering anything, you are only looking to argue or make jokes.

Re: Thoughts on this trailer

back to the trailer question .....why not modify the one you have?.....if its in good condition a little reinforcing and welding can get rid of the tilt feature....been there and done that....

Still a possibility. I need to add some forward bunks to help center the front of the hull to make it so I can drive on to the trailer. It's still a possibility. The other benefit of the trailer I posted above is it's width and height (it's much lower slung than my tilt trailer). The length of the trailer above also would let me keep the back wheels of the truck out of the water (not a huge deal). Tilting trailers just don't seem well designed to be used in a non-tilting way on a typical ramp (no surprise).
