Hi, I am new here and figured this would be a good place to get some info. I am looking at an older Glastron 15' boat to buy this Friday but would like to know what to look for. The guy is older and has told me he has put new foam and the floorboard support as well as floorboard on, but the boat has been sitting for a year. it has an 85 hp evinrude and he is a mechanic who has kept the motor maintained and says it does run great. All he says it need are reupholstered seats and fiberglass for the floor and carpet. I have a few pictures I would like you to look at and give me your best opinion on what you think about the boat. He has it listed at $850 with the trailer and all necessaries such as paddles, lights anchor and life vests. I would like him to meet us at the lake just to put it in the water and check for leaks, but since the boat is not registered for this year yet, it may not be possible so what do i look for in the hull as far as where leaks can come from and what do i look at with the rest of the boat to make sure it is at least lake ready and will run and float safely. And lastly do all these boats have bilge pumps and what should I check out with that. Any additional info would be recommended past what I have read on previous posts. Thank you

What part of the country are you in?? I personally would run away at 850, that wood looks like its been exposed for some time. If it rains there alot, and he didnt glass that deck you have no idea what u might be getting into. If that 85 really is a good runner it may be worth it, but what are you ready to take on? Check the transom, i usually tap it with a lighter or something hard (so as not to upset the seller) if you hear any dead soft or hollow sounds then run. However, if the boat fits your needs and you have the tools and drive then go for it. I have a 16' starcraft under construction and it wont have a bilge pump, that wont most likely either. I guess it depends on your use, if you are going into some big water with that then have a pump. Check the area around the drain plug, bottom of keel etc. Welcome, and good luck!!

Re: Thoughts on this

Thanks for the info, I live in Arizona and this boat is in Prescott. He said he replaced the floorboard braces and the floorboards a couple years back but the cover started leaking so he took it off which is probably where that floorboard rot came from. he said it wouldnt be to hard to lift up or replace that floor as it has not fiberglass holding it down or anything yet. If i were to lift it up and look inside before buying would i be able to see the stringers and braces and their condition. What would you pay for the boat if the internals looked good and what do you think i should look out for on the hull?

If he put foam in it and didn't seal the deck, I'd bet that foam is soaked and is causeing the stringers to rot and I'd bet the transom is shot too.
I wouldn't buy it inless your looking for a project boat,
I think for 850 you could do better.
300 maybe 400$ but thats just me.

Does it look like from the picture I would be able to get the floor up before I buy it relativly easy with out cutting anything to view the foam. Also if i lifted the floorboard up I would be able to view the stringers right?

I wouldn't spend that money for a closed bow fiberglass boat that's probably going to need major work with an electric shift outboard.

Really what you are buying is the engine, all other considerations are secondary. There is no way to know about the hull so dont base your choice on it. Base you choice on the engine. If it were me, i would want to hear it run and find out what parts for it cost.
