Just for the heck of it I picked 5 new Yamaha 225 4 strokes and 5 Evinrude etec 2 strokes tests at random.
and compared wot gph Yamaha averaged 21.4, Evinrude 19.95.
Doesn't say much about our present triplets but interesting.

I did a fair share of miles on this generation of motors; their johnny cousins mostly. I have a pretty good idea of what they have to offer. But then again, aside from long trips, fuel efficiency is not really a concern for us at all in Venezuela.

I was under the impression that 2-strokes were generally more fuel efficient in all applications. The downside was the oil mix, sound and contamination.

Nice to hear about your results. By the way, how did you get your hands on 10 engines to test? What was your methodology?

No update on the motors yet. I'm busy following some leads for a boat I'm trying to buy (Had another thread on the boats forum... I should probably update that)

Actually present day opinion is that 4 strokes are most efficient. But it's actually a wash with each motor excelling in its way.
I went to the Yamaha performance reports and Evinrude Etec site both have extensive pretty well detailed tests of their motors.
A limited search of Honda tests was pretty skimpy, Merc was better but lots of details missing some tests by second party.
It appeared Yamaha and Evinrude do their own tests.
