Ok now I have one to tell on myself! I just back from fishing and really had a miserable time. The out going tide was ripping thru my usual spot, anchor wouldn't hold and to top the day off nicely, "I threw my favorite Penn 350 level wind in the brink!" I had slimy hands, from the blue crab I had just put on, and thru my rod and reel right in the 25 foot water. Can't remember the rod brand name but it was a good setup! Ok guys now you can make fun of me! "I'll just go somewhere and cry."

Sorry about your loss, been there. I carry a big ### magnet onboard and in my toolbox. Your reel (if modern) is mostly SS and composite, won't help, but maybe an eye on the rod would have held. Current was probably going to take her away.:( Crabs in Tampa tells me you were looking for a big permit or giant Tarpon. I fished alot from Longboat Key to Egmont Key.

Hope to get my new HDS-7 Side Scan sonar module installed today. I might even go looking for my Penn 350 I threw into the bay yesterday and see if my sonar will "see" it. But I guess it's probably on it way to Cuba with the currents by now. Anyone else have one of these 350 reels. I really liked mine and am going to buy another.

If it's a fairly clear, sandy bottom, a small grappling hook or large treble hook with weights dragged along the bottom may pick up your rod/reel rig, especially if there was some line out for the hooks to grab onto. I've retrieved rigs like this. If the bottom is rocky, stumps, oyster bars, etc., you may be out of luck! A fish jerked my brother's new rod/reel out the back of the canoe on the grass beds at Cedar Key, and all he could do was watch it disappear. Good Luck!

Just bought another Penn 350 off eBad and an Okuma 7' Sarasota 20-40 lb rod from the local tackle shop. The reel looks in better condition than my old one and with the new Okuma rod it should be a very good set-up. I picked up a small grappling hook as an "next time just in case" tool! LoL Better not be a next time either.

i've done that before...i was casting out and the sinker wrapped around the tip and snatched the rod right out of my hand...it was like watching it fly out of my hand in slow motion. i also lost a really expensive rod and reel over and i dove in after that sucker and got it about 10ft down....i was fishing in 130 ft of water. i was lucky on that one. i also had a 400 rig(carrot stick and shimano spinning reel) bounce out of the top of my T-Top and i never realized it until i got to the dock.

My buddy tosses his one piece pole in my 12ft aluminum boat when we go on trips and I am always worried about it just bouncing out. I have no pole holders for storing poles while driving. I always fold a seat down in the car and slide mine in through the trunk. I've lost a small cooler with all of our bait in it like that. It was really frustrating driving an hour from the bait shop and getting to our spot, only to turn around and leave. I guess that's better than a good pole though.

Got my replacement Penn 350 reel yesterday. It's really a lot ncer than the one I lost. It almost looks new and functions perfectly. I put some Ande 60# line on it, cause that's what I had, but I gotta tell ya that is really some stiff line. I'm sure that it will work just fine for bottom fishing. $40 shipped was a good deal for this reel.
