Over many years, the throttle cable on my 1987 88 SPL has slackened. I finally got around to adjusting the trunion nut (all the way out). The idle screw comes close to the stop, but does not quite reach it.

What really puzzles me is the behavior of the throttle mechanism and metal rod. When I open the throttle from the idle position, there is no movement in the throttle metal rod (up near the flywheel) until the throttle control is moved 30-45 degrees from vertical! From the WOT position back to the idle position is a different story. The throttle assembly will move continuously back as the throttle control is moved from WOT all the way back to the idle position. Is this normal (the lack of movement of the metal rod when opening the throttle from the idle position)? What is the purpose of that mechanism below the flywheel- I assume it is for adjusting the ignition timing?

I have not tested the throttle controls since adjusting, but am I likely to get a stable operation now when shifting into gear? It had gotten to the point where the motor would cut out when going into gear unless I was very quick with the throttle control.
