throttle cable adjustment

I have a 1970 40 horse johnson electric shift. I replaced the throttle cable and the new one is longer. Can any one tell me the proper way to adjust it? The motor turns over when it is in foward and I don't know if this is normal. <br /><br />thanks for any help

The engine will stay in forward until 12V's is applied to the shift solenoids and the engine is running. This is built into the system in case you lose 12V's to the shift solenoids or the solenoids fail....the lower unit will stay in forward so you can get home.<br /><br />Throttle cable...leave the control in neutral. Make sure the throttle lever on the engine is fully retarded....usually the connection stub on the lever will be all the way forward. Attach the throttle cable casing guide to the throttle lever. Adjust the cables trunnion nut to fit the trunnion anchor slot using just a little pulling tension on the cable to remove the slack. Install the cable retainer over the anchor slot.<br /><br />How much longer is the new cable? It should come directly back to the engine and make a two to three foot loop into the engine. This is to allow the cable to move freely with the engine with out kinking the cable.

Thanks for assistance. <br /><br />In regards to the cable I had taken the boat and motor to a boat repair place and I spent $1000.00 on the motor alone. The said I needed a longer cable and ordered it for me. In order to save some money I have done a lot of work myself. The boat was my great uncles then he died and my dad got it and then he died last year and now I have it. The manuel was in a plastic bag in the boat and ants some how got in it and it is in peices. My brother had left the boat and motor in the weather for about 13 years. I will have to check on the difference in length. <br />Thanks Dennis
