throttle cable cracked sheathing

I bought a 2001 90 HP Johnson Oceanrunner last fall and noticed that the cable sheathing has been damaged on several of the cables, including the throttle cable. It exposes a very small section of cable in each case. It's hard to say how this happened- I suspect it is just UV damage, but I have never seen this on an OB before.

I am kind of worried that this will eventually make cable movement difficult as rust develops in the exposed cable. Throttle movement already is just a tad stiffer than I would like.

Is there a fix that will last (other than replacing these cables)? I am tempted to use an epoxy product to repair the damaged areas of sheathing. Do I need to lubricate the cables? How is this done?

One more question: why is there virtually no movement of the cable within the sheathing when the throttle is opened/closed? I watched very closely and could not see the cable move at all while the throttle position was moved.

Probably what you see is not the cable itself but the steel wire wrapping that makes up the tube that the cable slides in.

bite the bullet and replace the cables, as the will fail at the most inopertune time. ther should be a part # on each of the cable seathings.
