Throttle Cable Problems

I frequent many forums and I hate to break the ice with something like this but here we go...

I have a f&f 1860 aluminum CC with a 90 HP mercury. I have had horrible problems with my throttle cable. On a recent fishing trip it got to the point where I could not even get it into neutral.

The cable runs from the side of the console down under the console then to the side of the boat and then runs back to the motor and "swirls" around and inserts into the motor. My question is... is this to much angle for the cable to perform properly? I feel like the cable needs a new route back to the motor.

This pic is on a G3 CC just like mine. I just used it for reference...

I am no boat expert but I feel like this cable run is not a super hard project. Just looking for suggestions. At the end of the day I just want a smooth throttle that shifts easily. Thanks for any help!

Re: Throttle Cable Problems

That cable run looks fine to me. I kinda' think your issue may be the control box itself. Some of the older Mercury or Quicksilver boxes suffered this issue as they started to wear out. I recommend installing a Gen II box and cables. These boxes work very nicely.

Craig, I was unable to see your picture. What year is your motor? Is it inline six?

Normally, you adjust the barrel nut on the throttle cables to push the throttle closed, control in neutral. Adjust it an extra turn longer to preload the throttle a bit. This will help you feel neutral.
