throttle cable stretched??

hey guys,
got the motor running and purring quite with ear muffs
Next Problem -
If I adjust the throttle cable to where it wil pull the boat back down to idle, it will not idle up with the lever, or get full throttle in forward or reverse.
If I adjust it to get high idle with the lever or full throttle with shifter, it will not idle down to normal when I return everything to what should be idle position..
It doesn't pull the timing and throttle arms back against the stop, that when pushed to, gets correct idle.
Is this indicative of a stretched cable or something wrong with my controls??

You most likely need to adjust the "barrel" on the throtle cable, but since I have no clue of what motor or contoller you have, its just a guess, since I am not a mind reader. Many people do not read other post you may or maynot have made, so its best to give all pertinate information into all posts.

Re: throttle cable stretched??

thanks for the links. ther're very helpful. Does anyone have or know where to find a diagram for the merc control box. I opened it up and i cant figue out where the little round metal ball is supposed to go,, It was loose in the bottom of the case.
thanks

Re: throttle cable stretched??

It sounds like its the neutral detent ball, and as for diagrams, not likely.
(If you have the sort of square one, black single lever, with rounded corners)The only two spots I can think of, are for neutral, (there is an indentation cut into the F_N_R cam) location. Look on the front of the controller for a silver screw, undo the screw and check if the ball is out of it. The other spot is for the opposite side of the same cam, and there is a hollowed section it sits in, but then again its been a while since I opened up one of those, and I might be wrong about it.

Re: throttle cable stretched??

I had the control box opened up again today and i got er all back together. Its still doing the same thing tho, i am unable to achieve full throttle. After taking a good look at the moving parts seems like some of them are worn out. As a temporary fix i rotated the throttle lever 1 spline back. What do i need to replace in this control box?? do they sell a rebuild kit??

Re: throttle cable stretched??

you should be able to adjust the brass barrels on the other end of the throtle cble to achive the required range.

If you can still find them ,replace the throttle and shift cams along with plastic bushings and brass roller on warm up level, the problems you describe is a worn out box...
