1.) I have a 17ft, CC with 1996 Johnson 88hp. When cruising at no wake speed the throttle seems to have a couple inches of play and the throttle slowly increases speed. The throttle control does not move. I had the throttle and shift cable changed about 5 months ago.

2.) When cruising between 1/2 throttle and full speed sometimes the engine dies instantly, no sputter or warning. Just throws everyone to the front. I'm afraid it will happen and injure someone. As soon as it dies it restarts and runs fine. My mechanic says he's never heard of either of these problems.

check your linkage for any play, those plastic connectors wear. i don't know if you motor has this linkage, but the roller marked has an inner and outer of the roller. they are noted for the outer to crack, and come out, creating play in the linkage.

The instant stopping of the engine is almost certainly a short in the kill wire that runs from your remote control to the power pack. Not only is the quick stop dangerous, but it could harm your rectifier.

It could be caused by a loose emergency kill lanyard because the clips tend to spread and need occasional relacement. It could also be a failing ignition switch, but look for a short in the harnesses first.
