Throttle "drag" needs to be tightened

Have an older Johnson 6 HP outboard long shaft ... Model # CD 24 S --- Serial # J2816340 --- Can't keep speed constant and motor wants to "wander" rather than stay in the desired position for trolling!!???? Also would like to know the age (year) of this engine. Thanks ....motor on.....

Yes its a PITA. Later models , at leat some of them, were fitted with a clamp on the throttle control but I dont think that part would fit yours.

I solved the problem on my '84 model by making a thin fibre washer that fits on one of the pivot points ot the throttle linkage and making it tighter(Easier than fitting the clamp, which could be done to mine). I dont know if you could do something similar as the linkages are totally different.

its a bit of a fudge but does the job!

Inside the handle grip is a spring that adds tension to the throttle. Often this spring gets "misplaced" if the handle has ever been removed. Make sure it's there...
