Hi Everyone!
I've had great luck getting assistance in the past, so I wanted to try again!
I tried searching for a previous thread that would cover this but didn't have any luck, I also watched the carb/ignition video at the top of the page and followed it to the letter.
Engine Info...
70 HP Chrysler Outboard
3 Carbs
3 Cyclinders
707HA Model #
Good Compression, Spark, Etc.
I have cleaned the carbs (disassembled, cleaned, reassembled). Set the points. Fresh gas/oil. New spark plugs. ETC.
I'm going to reference some of the arrows in my picture because I am not sure what the correct names for the parts are.
I am trying to set my idle and it is not working well. My engine will fire for a second or so and then die out. It seems to want more throttle. When watching the video above (in the sticky), it tells me to...
Set the WOT timing to 32 degrees. (DONE)
Set the line (Yellow Arrow) to point at the screw/nylon ring (Red Arrow but mine is wrapped in electrical tape)
Connect the link arm (Green arrow)
Adjust the idle with the idle screw (Purple Arrow)
The issue that I have is that motor seems to want a bit more throttle than what it is set at. To get the motor to start/idle, I would have to put a spacer (small piece of wood) between the roller (red arrow) and the throttle arm (yellow arrow). Once I did this, the motor would fire right up and idle great.
If I adjust the throttle link arm (green arrow) it makes the mark go WAY past the roller (red arrow). It goes over halfway down the length of the arm.
If I use the idle screw to try to give it more throttle, it either will not turn over because the timing is too advanced and the safety switch prevents it (switch on the distributor) OR it pushes the throttle arm (yellow arrow) too far.
As a hack-job fix, I wrapped the roller in electrical tape (red arrow) to create the extra space and that seemed to do the job... however, I know that this is not the appropriate fix.
How can I adjust this to make it work properly?
NOTE: I know that the screw (red arrow) is oblong and that turning it will make it go closer/further from the line (yellow arrow). However, even at its closest point, it does not work.
ANY input would be great! I would like to not only fix this, but to it correctly. Once the motor is started (with the spacer) it seems to run quite well but I don't want to try to take it on the water before getting things set up properly. I am worried about breaking something.
THANK YOU! For any help you can provide!
