Throttle Lever Travel

What is the average sweep/range for the average external mount control box throttle lever? I have a '73 85hp Evinrude, and from the 12 o'clock idle position to WOT, the lever moves about 120 deg. and is pointing down towards the floor. Butterflys are closed at idle and horizontal at WOT, but the travel seems excessive.

Mine moves about 90?, a little less, give or take one or two degrees.

A good follow-up question might be, how many degrees of travel before the throttle cam hits the roller. Sorry mine's at a storage yard else I'd run outside & check on it.

Both of mine move well past the 90-degree mark. 120-degrees would be in the ballpark for mine.

I have a 77 johnson 70HP and my lever moves about 100 degrees.

wow on the two motors ive owned they have only traveled 90 degrees.

I would think the position of the throttle handle at WOT would mainly depend upon the motor control itself, not the motor. There are a lot of motor control styles, ages and makes and without including that info in your comparisons it won't mean a whole lot. One way to help determine whether perceived excessive throttle movement is caused by the control or the motor would be to compare cable travel at the motor end.

One thing I have noticed is that the first 20deg or so of travel on the throttle lever doesn't actuate throttle at the motor. It will shift into gear immediately past the 12 o'clock position, but doesn't throttle up until it gets past those 20deg. Haven't yet dug into the control box, is there any adjustability in there?

There is no adjustment for travel in any control box I'm familiar with. The fact that it is going into gear just off 12 o'clock makes me suspect throttle linkage slop (mis-adjustment) on the engine. You may need to adjust the throttle/ignition synchronization. Better get a manual (or a mechanic if you are not handy with such stuff). Synchronizing a motor is fairly simple with a good manual.

Manual is on the way, just hasn't showed up yet. I'm plenty handy with mechanicals so no worries. Thanks
