I have a 1993 3.0L mercruiser Bayliner, I have a problem that i am not sure which one to look at first. First when I start boat it idles ok but the monent I shift it in forward just out the nutrual position the motor acts like it wants to die, idling really bad till the motor shuts down but if i just bump it a little pass that position it runs fine. I first thought it might be carb problems maybe gummed up but after asking a few friends they telling me it is my throttle linkage problem. Does anyone know of this problem. Any help would be helpful. if it is throttle adjustment problems how would you adjust that and if carb problems how would rebuild or clean them. thanks

This sounds like a shift interruptor problem, but someone with more knowledge will chime in soon. You should be able to fix it with a linkage adjustment.

kinda what I was getting at. Shift interept works off cable tension. if misadjusted or cable starting to sieze you will have the kill switch triggering for a too long and b at wrong times

I was asking though cause it will usually just kill the motor and it wont stay stumbling like you have described. like you will shift and then be dead in the water. Sometimes over shifting overcomes this like going past neutral than back to neutral to shift into neutral

you can check by poping open and watching it as someone shifts. if it doesnt bounce back to rest in the middle position once in gear its no working right. Has 3 detents on it middle is running bottom and top are cut out for shift. It has to come to rest in the middle.
