Throttle problem on 1989 6hp Evinrude...

I finally got my little Evinrude up and running after practically rebuilding it, only to find one of the spark plug wires were bad all along, causing erratic spark on the bottom cylinder in turn causing it to bog down and not burn right at higher speeds.

Anyways, I took it out last weekend and everything ran great. The only problem was that on the way in, it seemed like the throttle cable was slipping; it was getting slower and slower, even though the handle was wide open. I know this has nothing to do with the engine itself because it was running fine wide open, and it also revs OK in neutral. Is there some sort of adjustment for the throttle cable, or did something come loose or something? Thanks for you guys' help!

Did you have the vent open on your gas tank. My engine has done this once before when I was driving I had forgot to open the vent. As I was driving it was slowing bogging down as if I lowered the throttle but I never moved the throttle. Just a thought. :D

Nope, the gas tank vent was open and everything else seemed to be as it should. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the throttle cable, but I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to check or adjust.

Did you actually witness the cable and linkages at the motor end moving or was the motor simply slowing down? Try it again with the cover off and watch the throttle cable for movement...

Also, note whether the motor is getting hot. May be overheating, causing RPM loss...

I am assuming that this is a tiller. If so on the side of the engine where the tiller handle bends there are two gears one on the shaft of the handle and one on a little shaft that actually moves the cable. I believe that both of these gears have some sort of key to keep them from spinning on the shaft. maybe one of those keys are missing and the gear is only turning from pressure fit??? Its a long shot but that is all I got.

Thanks for the info on the tiller handle. I'll have to put it in the bucket this evening and see what's going on with it.

It wouldn't have been overheating because I always keep an eye on things like that. The water coming out of it wasn't hot, and it wasn't really acting strange at all.
