1987 Merc. dual 5.7L eng. Throttle controls, when using each throttle handle separate Forward, Neut. and Rev. work well and smooth in and out of gear. Use throttles together and RH engine control handle gets very hard to shift in and out of Forward and Rev. feels like it jams up and takes extra force to move in and out of gear. When in gear both throttles move smooth problem is getting in and out of gear neut. to fwd and rev.

My guess is something is binding as you said, and the binding could be from wear. Have you tried to see if there is movement at the base other then fwd/rev, as in a tilt or slide when being moved? What kind of control do you have?

Might have to use photobucket to post the pic. Trying to find a breakdown for your console is a bit difficult due to age. I did find the link below, but may guess is your going to have to pull it apart and see what's binding. It's either that or the cables are pushing against one another down low, but first thought is in the control. To replace it I'm seeing $500 plus
