I am looking to purchase a modern used surface mount, center console style, throttle shift unit for my boat.

I currently have a 73 johnson 40. i may fix up a suzuki 35 or purchase an entirely different motor.

are the shifters unique to motor age and or brand or is it just the cables and or cable ends.

is there a specific brand or brands I should look for?

They are pretty much unique. Now, having said that, you could get a Teleflex or Morse unit that can be adapted to many different motors. Morse Controls was bought out by Teleflex. But they had some really nice console mount controls when they were still in business.

both are good quality units. morse is owned by by teleflex now. imho, i would go new teleflex. decide what motor you are going to use to keep from wasting money , on engine end connections. unfortunately, the competion in the outboard industry, has not gotten together. to make the "throw" of the linkages universal. thus everything is determine by the motor used.
