Throttle/shifter assembly proplem

I just traded for a 1978 Harris pontoon and one of the things I needed to fix was some yahoo mounted the throttle control box on the left side of the steering console and turned it 90 degrees. (top facing back keys down) Today I bolted a board to the rail to the right of the steering console and moved the shifter to it. After putting it back together I found that It will not go into gear, either forwards or reverse. Idle control moves fine though. Had it apart at least 5 times trying to figure out what I did wrong when I put it back together, but no luck. When I moved it I did not remove any cables. I instead cut a narrow groove in the deck that will be covered by the steering console once it goes back in. The only thing I did when I moved it was took the cover off, removed, cleaned and lubed the cam inside and reassembled it. Any ideas what I put back together wrong that is keeping it from moving? Perhaps the idle lever or cam needs to be in a specific position when put together?

Ok, put the boat in today and I apparently effed something up. Motor starts right up, but idles high and bogs down and cuts off when put into forward gear. It will shift into reverse, but that is all it will go. Very close to zero movement of the control in reverse. I'm so down on myself right now for screwing this up. Any ideas on what I might have done wrong? I'm hoping it's a matter of adjusting something that got out of whack when I moved the controls and not something worse. Boat ran fine last thursday before I messed with it.

what condition is the cable and sheath in? And did you do a dry run before you put it in the water? Post back results. Good luck Monte.

Cables are in good shape and I did hook up the hose and test it after I got it back together. I did not realize how little reverse there was until I got in the water because I merely bumped it into gear each way to verify it worked as not to rev the motor while just on the hose. Of course once I tried to go fishing everything went to crap. Its a 1984 Johnson 50hp motor btw.
