Throttle slop

My 1973 Merc 7.5 HP has quite a bit of play in the throttle. It has about 1/2 inch of play either way before the throttle actuates. The only part I thought could be responsible for the play is the bushing where it connects to the bottom cowl. However, the bushing is good and there is no side to side play in the connection. The design itself seems like it would be inherantly loose. Any suggestions on how to take up the slop?
