I have a 1990, 120hp Johnson outboard. We launched yesterday for the first time this year. It started fine but would not come down to an idle from a high rpm. I removed the engine cover and could get it to idle by pushing the lever the cable is connected to back to the idle position. With the cable disconnected is there supposed to be any spring pressure to bring that lever back to the idle position to allow the throttle to go to the idle? Or does it depend on the cable position alone? The grease is a bit "sticky" on the slide (not sure the proper description) in the control box the single lever throttle is attached to. I have used WD 40 to remove that and will apply some marine grease after cleaning. Really don't want to make the 1.5 hour trip to the closest boat shop. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the motor will automatically return to idle, the cable is what holds it. sounds as if you have a control/cable problem. the cables are not greasable, they are replaceable.

tashasdaddy,
Thanks for the info. After 20 years I guess it may require a little more than fuel, oil and wax for the hull. Here on Lake Roosevelt the water temp is getting up to 68 and there are family members wanting to ski.
Thanks again!
