Throttle Tension Issues and Control Box Removal (Pics attached)

I have a Quicksilver 3000 Series Throttle. I am in the process of replacing some parts on the handle for it.

I have a few questions about this:

1.) My throttle moves down smoothly into forward gear. Also, smoothly into neutral either direction. It DOES NOT move smoothly into reverse gear. The forward gear seems too loose, as it wants to fall back on me. The only thing I could see was that I had a broken bushing. I am replacing this but not sure this would have anything to do with it. I inspected the throttle cables and can't see anything suspicious. A poster on this forum told me I could tighten the nut on the handle. He called it a "tensioner" nut. The only nut I could find was the 11/16" brass hex nut behind the neutral only button. I tightened and loosened for testing and it made no difference.

Could something need greasing?

Could it be that broken bushing?

Could the reverse cable be worn inside of the control box?

Could there be a jammed piece inside the box?

The actual cables look fine cosmetically.



2.) My Controls are mounted with bolts that have nuts on the ends of them. They will just turn and turn if you put a socket on the outside. Problem is 3 of 4 of these are almost impossible to access. Make that, Impossible. There is an opening on the side closest to the steering wheel that I can put my hand into blindly and reach the gear box. However, there is a piece of the gear box blocking access to the other side where the other bolts are. If I try to access from the back (stern side) it is easily 2 arm lengths reach.

How on earth could this be removed?

If in fact my cables are bad, would I need to remove the box? If so, I don't see how it is possible without ripping the sides off the boat.

There must be someway.

Move the throttle handle to full forward, then remove the center neutral button. There is a screw/bolt in the middle. Remove that to gain access to the cover and screws behind the handle.

I just checked the link and can't seem to find the tension screw anywhere on the diagram. Mine is the regular 3000, not the classic. I see something that might be the tension adj on the classic though. Could you point out on the pic I'm attaching where the tension screw might be? Thanks.

Don't know if you have a tension spring or not. I have the same control on my Rinker which is identified in pic below. The guts of the control should be one of the items also pointed out below. Need to go thru and see which one you have, but you first must remove the control to see which you have 1 control.jpg
