Throttle up to start

Hello,

I just bought a capri with a 90HP force. I can get it to start if I pull the neutral arm out and increase the throttle half way up. After it starts it runs pretty good unless I put it all the way down to idle, it then stalls out. Is this the Idle that needs to be adjusted or could something be blocking the fuel line?

Just getting some idea's before I jump into it?

Thanks!

Re: Throttle up to start

Hi Brian.
Welcome to the forum!!! I am new to boat motors myself, but not motors in general. If you follow the correct starting procedures as outlined in the forums you might have a different result. You can do a search and find it. If you still have the same problem, then you might have an idle issue. I would quote the procedure, but I'm liable to forget something. Everybody here is more than happy to share their knowledge and experience with you.

Re: Throttle up to start

Given the info you presented, the answer is yes. Probably too low of an idle speed.

In addition to Foodfisher's comment, the idle should be around 1000~1100RPM in neutral and around 700~800 RPM idle in gear. You can adjust the idle with the idle screw adjustment located at the bottom of the control tower. However, before doing this make sure the engine is not misfiring which is probably the reason the idle is low in the first place.

Basics!!!Year? Model? Serial#
Location? You might be close to someone who can help?
Do a compression and spark test FIRST.
Low comp or no spark on 1 cylinder can cause this.
The air screws on the carbs. It might need to be reset?
After the comp/spark test.
Make sure the fuel pump diaphragm is good.
Or it could be the idle is too low.
In gear,750-800.
Check for exhaust leaks under the cowl.
I had BOTH exhaust bellows clamps go bad and was filling the cowl with smoke and it was choking out the motors.

Hi Brian

what year is the engine? give us the serial number. Mine is a 1997 90 HP on a Bayliner Capri 1702. Maybe we can change useful information's and technical advice's.

Thanks

Re: Throttle up to start

Sorry guys, it's a 1992 Capri 1800. I put a new Fuel line and Bulb in, I also put new plugs and check for a spark and got good sparks on all 3 Cylinders. I adjusted the throttle last night and it was running for an hour or so in Neutral fine. Then I turned it off and tried to start it an hour later. It wouldn't start unless I increased the throttle. After it runs for a while then I can now put it back to idle. When I bought it the lady said it has been sitting since April. It had about a half a tank. I filled it with fresh fuel, Added a Stabilizer as well.

I am stopping and getting a compression tool on my way home from work and will let you know on that. Should I put the idle back to where it was before resetting the Air screws on the carb?

I would like to install a Tach on my boat as well, I know it needs to be a 20 Pole but finding one with a back light look like a hard thing to find.

Thanks again!

Re: Throttle up to start

Ok, We have a Winner!!!!!!!!! #1 is 100 #2 is 60 #3 120

I looked at the gasket and it looks good with no holes that I can see. I had an 88 Bayliner with an 85 Force and #2 was about at 60 and it was the head gasket. All the plugs looked pretty good and clean. There was a little wet black on #2.

I am not a mechanic but if you think it's the gasket I am sure I can do that. Any idea's would be a help. If you think it's a ring or head then that may be more than I could do.

Thanks again!

Re: Throttle up to start

Post some pics of the gasket and the other parts.
Look inside the holes and see if there is any damage?

Do you mean take the head cover off and show the heads?

Re: Throttle up to start

Take the cylinder head cover off and expose the head gasket.
Then take pics of the gasket and piston heads.
Then turn the head over and take pics of that too.

Re: Throttle up to start

Do I need to take the T-Stat off or just the two bolts next to it that hold the top of the head cover? You can tell that it's been removed before, Just looking at the gasket edges it looks newer. IMG-20130911-00383.jpgIMG-20130911-00384.jpg

Re: Throttle up to start

Ok got it off! I have a few pictures and a few videos. The Gasket didn't look bad at all. I did notice that the #2 piston was not smooth on top like the other two. I took a flash light and looked good. I didn't see any cracks inside the cylinder and all 3 were wet. When I was taking off the bolts the one to the right of #2 was easy to take off. It wasn't lose but I could have gotten it off with a pair of needle nose. These are the pics, my next post will have the Video.
