I have what i believe to be a 88 evinrude. tag says 115et17__ i cant read the last 2numbers. Its on a 93 alumacraft. I just purchased it on the notion everything worked when parked. i got it started and attempted to place it in gear and the shifter will not move. This is my first boat but i believe i did it correctly i pulled the red part underneath the throttle and attempted to go forward and backward to no avail. Any suggestions?

Re: Throttle wont move?

Disconnect the cable at the engine and try to move the throttle/shifter. If it moves freely the problem is with the engine. If not, the problem is in the control box.

You can move the shift lever on the engine by hand with the cable disconnected (engine running at idle). You cannot always move the shifter with the engine not running. It all depends on how things are lined up when the engine is shut off as to whether it will shift or not. If you can't get it to shift by hand with the engine running there is definitely an engine issue.

Between this thread and the other you have I'm confused. Don't know the engine # but is this a tiller or remote engine?
I too thought this was a remote until I read oops response.

I am sorry for the confusion i have a steering wheel with the lever to the right of it. It has a key and push button choke. also has a fast idle lever.

I am a newb on the boats but have a mechanical background. What would be the proper verbage for my "lever" is that considered the throttle?

"Throttle" is fine.

What HP is the motor? I'm thinking 88 is the year not the HP. Also, if you wanna' put a photo of the controller up, folks can probably give you some added tips.

Sounds like the cables are frozen, as Silvertip said, disconnect the cables at the engine and confirm the engine side moves and the throttle still won't, if so it is the cables and they need replaced, there is nothing you can do to save them.

Check here at iboats, they generally have the best price and the service is unbeatable.

I'm thinking the same thing. Wanted to figure out the whole "tiller" aspect though. Don't think there's a 115HP with a tiller, but who knows :D

Re: Throttle wont move?

Don't dash to replace the cables until you decide for sure they are stuck. Incorrect use of the fast idle lever and the throttle lever has been cause for lots of buggered control boxes. As I said, disconnect BOTH the throttle and shift cables at the engine (pay attention to which is which). Now make sure the fast idle lever is in the full down and latched positiion. You cannot move the throttle lever forward if the fast idle is raised even a little bit. Cycle the fast idle lever up and down to make sure it is full down. Now make sure you have fully depressed (squeezed) the red interlock button under the handle while attempting to move the throttle lever. If it now works the problem may have been operator error but the proof will be when you reattach the cables at the engine. With the engine running see if you can now move the lever. If it is still bound up, disconnect the cables again and try to move the shift lever manually . If not there is a gearcase or linkage issue. If you cannot move the lever with the cables disconnected, there is something wrong in the control box OR the cables are indeed stuck. Only with disassembly of the control bax will you be able to see what's wrong.

Re: Throttle wont move?

Thanks guys it appears I was being over cautious it's just tight held constant pressure on it and it works. Gonna get some plugs and try her out
