Throttle wont stay down 77 mercury 850 85 hp

I have a mercury 850 85 hp. When its in full throttle the handle dosent stay when i let go, why? is ther an adjustment or is suppose to be like that. also there is alot of play when putting into gear. if you have any anwsers let me know thanks.

there should be a tension (frictiion) adjustment at the front of the box.

Yes...Some are a small black knob you can screw in or out to adjust friction..

with that style control box its usually one of the cams inside worn...along with a stiff throttle cable it can be a pain...luckily the cams are still available even aftermarket...sierra offers them

I never saw an adjustment on my '77 MerControl, for friction. I will look again, however, the only time I ever had that trouble was when the throttle cable was brand new and mooved too easily. I just waited for the grease to get old, and the problem went away.

Did you have to hold down the throttle? but i will look to see if there is an adjustment.

If you have the MerControl type box, there is no tension control or adjustment. I currently have mine in pieces to rewire the whole thing.
