Re: throttling problem

just an update. my kits came today but were the wrong kits without new floats so they should be here in the morning by 0830. im pretty sure my floats are good but i might as well go ahead and change them. i read over the thread and didnt see that i mentioned another problem which i think is the main cause of my problem.

when i was moving the top carb float up and down i was hearing a clicking noise. i looked closer at it and notice the needle was sticking in the seat and when the float dropped low enough the spring on the needle and float would pull the needle out of the seat and the end of the smack the float making a metal on metal sound. im pretty sure this is the problem. what do yall think about this symptom?

Re: throttling problem

carbs are rebuilt. going to the house to put them in. now just have to fine the idle adjustment screw. i have read where it should be on the motor but it sounds like some people are still having a hard time with it

Re: throttling problem

well it was idling great on the trailer. used some seafoam. then went and put it in the water and it wouldnt want to start unless in high idle. then to get it in gear i would have to put it in low idle real fast then put it in gear and go or it would die. the speeding and slowing problem was minimal but still there. and i messed with what i believe is the idle screw next to the shift cable. but not it would start at all. what did i do?

post a picture of the side of you motor, with out the cowl. fairly close so we can see the linkage. will point it out to you.

Re: throttling problem

well i kept messing with the links and stuff finally got it started but not as good as it was. my i need to have to sync all the links? i didnt mess with the carb links when i took it apart so the carbs should be synced. but i dont think then throttle and shift links are.

You may want to make those bigger, hard to make out much.

Re: throttling problem

While you are into the carbs... set the float level. Inverted the float will sit parallel to the carb base. Drop setting may be listed in the manual. both have to do with fuel use.

G i did that when i rebuilt them this morning and the motor idle very well until it got into the water. and now that i messed with something it doesnt want to idle very well. im going to try to link and sync. i really have no idea how but i think i can figure it out. i aint got time to buy a book, im going hunting on sunday and i only have tomorrow and saturday to work on it.

if yall have tips about that let me know thanks

Re: throttling problem

Make sure that the carburetors are synchronized by taking the cover off and watching the throttle plate as you or someone moves the throttle arm.

The throttle plates should be fully closed at idle and fully horizontal at WOT. And they must move 100% together at all points in the range.

Your motor can run on one cylinder with no load and sound OK., so run the compression checks and spark tests to be sure that both cylinders are functioning properly. If you use an inductive timing light you can check the spark through the firing range.

Re: throttling problem

i got the linkage set and its idling great in a barrel of water with no problems. except....

before i tested the motor for compression i had the motor running i pulled the top spark plug wire and nothing happened. then i pulled the bottom spark plug wire and it shut off. so im pretty sure this is the problem so far. Yesterday when i had it on the water at WOT it was very fast. could it be this fast on 1 cylinder? or could the top cylinder be kicking in and out?

i also went to test the compression testing gauge by blowing compressed air into the gauge. then i sucked on the end and it brought the needle down. is this supposed to do this, or save the reading?

Correct type of tester will be screw in type and will have a valve that allows you to hold the highest pressure reading until you press the release.
