Through hull pickup and sterndrive

We're getting our boat repowered after our old 5.0L Mercruiser with Bravo 2 drive died. The drive is fine so we are keeping it which means its just a new engine. The replacement engine the mechanics are putting in is the newer 5.0L MPI engine with the closed cooling (Its not the whole Seacore system). They are telling us that it will need to use both the sterndrive water pickup and an additional through-hull scoop fitting because of the closed cooling system. I found this odd as the previous engine had closed cooling (only through the engine - not manifolds) but did not require an additional pickup. Is what they are telling us correct?

Also when they showed me the pickup going in they said that the slots on it would face towards the stern. This seems strange too as I thought that would restrict the intake of water.

I'd appreciate any help you can give.

Cheers

the reading i have done when i was looking into this was if your cooling the block only then the sterndrive pump is fine if you are trying to cool the whole system block and manifolds then you should add a sep. raw water pump I found that if you have the room in front of the engine you can get a crank shaft style pump alot cheaper. and as far as the strainer I thought the intake points to the bow for the raw water set up but facing the stern when you have a washdown pump.

Thanks for the reply. As for the pickup itself, thats what I thought too. I event found a Mercruiser installation manual that specifically says it must point forwards. I just wondered if it may have changed.

As for the closed cooling, because the engine is another Bravo it has the raw water pump on the engine itself, just like the previous engine. What I don't understand is why they are saying it needs an additional water intake on top of the water intake on the sterndrive.

Yes, you will need both pickups, and there is a Y inside the boat. See the image below that I took from the Mercruiser application manual.
The strainer, on the other hand, should have the slots facing the water, if not, it would create a low pressure area on the back side and actually try to suck the water out of the pump.

I thought it didn't seem quite right. This is a photo taken from the stern.Intake.jpg
Thanks for you help, I'll get onto them right away.
