through / thru hull exhaust question manual valves

Hi guys......lots of knowledge on this forum.

I have a recently bought a 2001 Tracker Tahoe w/ a Chevy 305 in it and it has thru hull exhaust. I like it but when pulling skiers or tube it's hard to communicate with them with the engine running. I dont want to take them off because I enjoy them when just crusing around. It still has the Y pipe in place for thru pipe exhaust and it has Y pipes from each exhaust manifold and the Y's go to the thru hull and to the thru prop.

Does anyone make some manual valves I can install to switch between thru hull and thru prop? The captains call or others are rediculously expensive. I know they make them for cars for open exhaust. I just cant find 4" stainless valves.

Another option that I can think of is possibly capping the thru hull pipes off from the outside not from engine compartment (replace the flappers with some sort of rubber cap). Problem is that I can't find anything to use or fit the 4" pipes. Pipes Caps from lowes are too large in diameter to seal well. I don't even know if a cap like that with a hose clamp would stay on.

Thanks for any help or ideas towards this.

no sympathy from me... if they annoy you when you want to communicate just imaging how the other people on the water feel. Useless loud exhaust on boats is one of my pet peeves.

That said, the only communication you need with your skiers would be a few simple hand signals between them and the spotter.

Personally I hate open headers, It's like there's always some guy that insists on bringing his hand cannon to the indoor range to impress his girlfriend. I had some idiot next to me yesterday blasting off a 500 to prove how big his... bullets were.

To each his own. I used to like loud radios, and my bike has loud pipes, tho I still say they have saved my life more than once.

However, here's some 4" Exhaust cutout valves. Electric are all I could find in 4"

Through hull exhaust is serving the purpose of "hey look at me". We do look, somewhat in disgust as the excessive noise is disturbing~~ but it is only about you. As said above ~~~ no sympathy.

See if a Fernco fitting from a plumbing supply store will fit. They are real thick rubber. You will need to protect them from heat, or they could melt. Like the others, I would lose the thru pipe sound. If gives no advantage in HP, and is deafening, when passing my house, at idle speed.

Keep the thru hull pipes, just cap them on the inside.

+1, I don't mind it on a Fountain or Donzi go fast, but on your average 50 MPH bowrider I think it's a little ridiculous.

OP, Corsa makes some very good products for what you're trying to do. I'm not sure if they have a manual one but here's a link:

Lol, wow. A lot of "haters" on here regarding the thru hulls. It's one thing if they are firing up at the dock at 6a.m. and revving the engine, it's another for someone to enjoy the roar of the engine out on the open water away from everyone. I don't have thru hulls, but I've never scoffed at someone who did, regardless of whether they have them on a Cigarette or a Crownline. Lighten up a bit!

Lookup Captains Call exhaust systems. As for the above water exhaust - yup, I hate it too. It is like those boneheads with the huge speakers on their wakeboard boats who don't realize that you can hear it from the other end of the lake.

When do you ever see (hear) them "out on the open water away from everyone."? They need their arrogant ego fed along the lake or ICW. Don't think I've ever seen one beyond 1/4 mile of shore in the Atlantic. They rarely leave the inlet as their are fewer people to notice them.

Re: through / thru hull exhaust question manual valves

Yeah a lot of emotional people on this forum over one question which didn't even consist of asking for opinions whether to keep the exhaust or not. My thru hull tips do have silencers in them and it's a tiny chevy V8 with a wet exhaust. Not loud at all compared to my old corvette with sidepipes and other, much larger boats I've heard out on the water. Ironically, I get nothing but smiles and waves from people when I'm out driving my vette around town and in neighborhoods. Cops don't bother me either, they just look and nod. Now if I'm out acting a fool in town or neighborhoods and reving my engine and doing burnouts that's ususally a different story. :D

Please guys, back to the question(s) at hand. I didn't post this to read about everyone personal feelings about thru hull exhaust on boats. I'm just trying to find something to work on my boat so I can switch between thru hull and thru prop exhaust for a reasonable amount of money ($1000 +/- is out fo the question for the captains call) Thanks to the ones who gave some sort of input on ideas I can look into further. Any other help is appreciated.

Going to have a hard time finding a cheap marine solution. There are many car systems, but in a car you don't die if they don't seal correctly.

This place has the best information around, but you can't talk about open exhaust or stereo's here.

You might want to try another forum like offshoreonly. Everyone there has open exhaust. Coming from a lake with a lot of big power boats, I can't think of seeing anything manual, however contacting your local performance shop might give you some ideas.

Ayuh,.... Are yu sayin' that the original Y-pipe is still in place,....
That ya got thru-hulls,...
And,...
There's the "T" pipes connectin' the 2 systems, but no valve inside the "T" pipes,..??

Which would mean the exhaust can flow either thru-hull, 'n thru-prop at the same time,..??

Re: through / thru hull exhaust question manual valves

I would think that if both systems are hooked up at the moment, a simple manual butterfly/baffle on the end of the thru-hull tips would redirect most of the noise thru the prop, but it wouldn't seal them completely.

Close, they are "Y" pipes though. I don't know if this is the same manufacturer. Looks exactly like it though. Same way the captains call corsa's are, just no electric valve. A picture is worth a thousand words, see link below.

Thanks, I don't think they'd melt since the exhaust still has water running through it. The flappers I have are rubber and don't melt. Although it may be a different kind of rubber resistant to heat?

I'm not sure if the water would build up at the end of that pipe and somehow make it back into the engine with a quick let off of the throttle? I wonder about the exhaust pressure, if it would blow the plugs out of the pipes?

Ayuh,.... Yer exhaust, 'n the water with it will flow the path of least resistance,...

The simplest way to achieve what ya want is to make some sorta bracket that holds the existin' flappers closed,....
90% or more of the exhaust, 'n water will exit through the prop, 'n any water left should seep past yer flappers,...

Couple pieces of waterproof duct tape might be an easy way to see if that would work.

Re: through / thru hull exhaust question manual valves

Here is what i had to do with mine.....Fortunately i am welder/fabricator and did it myself?possibly could take them off and have someone design/fab a valve for you.

I leave butterfly closed all the time and it is a lot quieter than open!
