Re: through / thru hull exhaust question manual valves

couple of 180 degree bends back over the transom would be my vote

Wouldn't take too terribly much effort to pull the aftermarket T pipes and put stock elbows in place for skiing with a couple of the rubber pipe caps on the inside of the thru hulls for skiing and swap back for when you need to be looked at.

No emotion involved. Just giving opinions if you don't like them, don't read them. We don't really care about your "look at me car" either. The thin skinned ~~~ well you know!

Yeah a lot of emotional people on this forum over one question which didn't even consist of asking for opinions whether to keep the exhaust or not. My thru hull tips do have silencers in them and it's a tiny chevy V8 with a wet exhaust. Not loud at all compared to my old corvette with sidepipes and other, much larger boats I've heard out on the water. Ironically, I get nothing but smiles and waves from people when I'm out driving my vette around town and in neighborhoods. Cops don't bother me either, they just look and nod. Now if I'm out acting a fool in town or neighborhoods and reving my engine and doing burnouts that's ususally a different story. :D

Please guys, back to the question(s) at hand. I didn't post this to read about everyone personal feelings about thru hull exhaust on boats. I'm just trying to find something to work on my boat so I can switch between thru hull and thru prop exhaust for a reasonable amount of money ($1000 +/- is out fo the question for the captains call) Thanks to the ones who gave some sort of input on ideas I can look into further. Any other help is appreciated.

Opinions are subjective and are based on one's feelings (or emotions) toward something. I'd rather you not share your emotions with me about the subject of my original post. If you must, by all means go for it. It's gotta be easier to ignore you compared to my loud exhaust. haha...have a good one!

Here is what i had to do with mine.....Fortunately i am welder/fabricator and did it myself…possibly could take them off and have someone design/fab a valve for you.

I leave butterfly closed all the time and it is a lot quieter than open!

Yeah I like this. Your fab skills look good too. Did you make the butterfly valve part yourself out of a sheet stainless steel? Also, did you use some kind of bushing for the rod going through the pipe to keep water and fumes from escaping into the engine compartment?

Back to the original question.......

Yes I used 1/8? S/S plate for the flap??.then used a 1? long S/S threaded rod coupling tack welded to the flap plate?.then took a 4? S/S U-bolt and cut the threaded straight sections off. Which has a threaded part and a smooth shank part
When I put it together I threaded the rods into the coupling from the outside and then tack welded the rod threads to the coupling inside. Used S/S flat washers with S/S nuts tacked to the rod/pipe on the outside ??.when I drilled the holes I made them tight and I used 3-M 5200 on the outside joints to seal it.

With the drilled baffle plate added and keeping the flap closed? it has a nice rumble but not too loud !

Doesn't sound too bad. I'll post up some photos when I finish. Maybe it'll help someone else be "that guy" in the future. Thanks again for the help guys!

Re: through / thru hull exhaust question manual valves

I like it but when pulling skiers or tube it's hard to communicate with them with the engine running. I dont want to take them off because I enjoy them when just crusing around.

Despite the firestorm you kicked off (NEVER saw that coming!), the second post answered your question exactly... Nobody in their right mind would rely on verbal communication from someone in the water. Too dangerous, too ambigious. There is a standard set of watersports 'sign language' exactly for this purpose.

(The only thing I extend onto that sheet was the head pat while I"m in the water means I'm done, pick me up. No head pat means I'm ready for another round!)

Sorry I should've been more clear earlier on. I meant communication before they actually get to the end of the rope or if we circle them when they fall off. The wife likes to talk to who ever is in the water between pulls. I agree hand or sign language is best suited for communication between boat and skier.

Firestorm?.......nah, these guys are nothing compared to some of the other forums I frequent. Cheers!

Actually, the official symbol of a Finger drawn across the skiiers throat says, "come and get me, I'm done". Thumbs up is go faster, Thumbs down is go slower. Driver "draws" a circle in the air, and points left or right, means I am going to make a u turn, in that direction, so get ready.

The skiier pulling a beer out of his pants means "I am enjoying this run".

I took some of your ideas and went with it. 1/2" bolt and cut threads off, drilled and tapped holes in it for mounting plate to it instead of welding. Tolerances are very tight for 1/2" bolt and butterfly valve plate. Sealed ends of with the 4200 sealant. Excuse the ugly welds.I wanted only open and closed so that's all I drilled holes for in the lock down plate on the side. Thanks for the ideas, saved me a ton of money. A good friend had some scrap stainless steel 1/8" plate I used. Can't wait til it warms up to try them out.

Looks good.. glad i could help a another boater save some cash for Gas!…
Don’t know if you can reach inside and tack weld those bolts on the flapper….if not maybe some 5200 on the nuts to keep them from vibrating loose.

For a third of the cost of Captains calls… Cant beat it!

Proly gona have to do some trimming on the pipes…break out the wiz wheel…….measure 4 times... cut once

Post up some pics when you get them installed.
