It's not the wrong thing to talk about just maybe the wrong board. Thru-hulls can really look good and sound good on some boats. I don't like the noise though. Too many twin/tripple engined big blocks reving the engines and not being able to think while they are idleing at the ramp has made my opinion of thru-hull nothing more than something to attrack people's attention. I like to have a conversation or listen to the radio while boating.

but...on an old sleekcraft if done properly it might really add to the boat.

Do it, but experiment with different exhaust options and tuning until you get something that is perfectly matched for the engine. Loud and sloppy < tasteful and balanced (muffle it). V8s can make beautiful noise.

I didnt/dont know which board to go to.Im not looking to blow the marina out of the water, just looking for a better sound. Its like buying any old Chevy w/ v8 and putting Flowmaster mufflers on to get a better sound out of it...NOT loud and nasty, just better sound.....So if you can direct me to the proper board where this subject is not so offensive I would be very thankful.....

Just my opinion....

If they made a totally silent engine, I'd buy one tomorrow. Nothing WORST than having to compete with engine noise to talk to your wife/friends etc while enjoying the sanctuary of the water.

As for other people with loud obnoxious engine noise.... inconsiderate, selfish and totally narcissistic individuals who should be removed from normal society! Engine manufacturers provide thru-prop exhaust for a very good reason, so the engine noise is buried deep underwater. It appears they understand what people prefer when out for a pleasant day on the water.

If you really like that sort of noise, go to the speedway but please, leave the waterways as quiet as possible.

As I opened with, just my opinion... and you did ask.

Chris.......

Ayuh,... 1st off, ya gotta replace the Log manifolds with center risers...
Then run straight 4' pipe out the transom,+ add some Tips...
All Done,+ it'll be LOUD...
Depending on Where you go boatin',... Enjoy paying the Noise Tickets...

Re: through transom exhaust w/mercruiser I/O

The friendly (yes, they really are friendly) folks here on these boards convinced me to keep my water-lift mufflers and exhaust below the swim platform.

I was gonna run 4" pipe off the risers and go straight out the back. Then I was gonna keep the stock (above waterline, below swim deck) exhaust location but remove the waterlift mufflers.

I have to say, I never knew how many boaters didn't like the noise (it doesn't bother me). Once I listened to the boating community, I decided it wasn't something I wanted. I like to pull up to friends' marinas and homes and visit. We also have four kids, and while I duck in/out of the Atlantic and run across the Chessie and Deleware Bays, most running is in-shore, near other boats/people.

I have a very nice rumble (502 cubic inches will do that), but it is pleasant underway, and noise doesn't equal speed/power. In my case, I show off my water-lift mufflers like some sort of cool accessory that no one else has.

I say: Worry about something else. The noise gets old, and a big part of boating is the community of people. I'll take them over an open exhaust any day.

BUT... if you want to do it, you need tall risers, 4" pipe to within about 6" of the transom, then exhaust hoses that connect to exhaust thru-hull tips, and a hole saw to cut some holes in the transom.

In a couple of years, 75% of the country will be waiting to ticket you.

i dont like load exhaust either. I like when a sail boat comes by the peace and quiet and they are movin. Some day we will take that thing off the back of the deloreon and put it in our boats.

A single SBC won't be that loud unless you're running dry pipes. I had thru-hull on my 23' 454 jetboat and miss the sound terribly. Can't stand the no-sound twins! You may want to look into a switchable system so you can have nice and quiet time and rumble time.

There are also switchable mufflers, but I'm told they're not as quiet as switching to thru-hub.

Please don't inflict your love of a noisy boat on others. The guy behind you gets an earful that you never hear since the sound is projected backwards. That pleasant rumble at idle changes dramatically at 3/4 throttle.

Just put this sound, http://www.autospeak.com/grpsnda/loud02.wav on a CD, loop it, and play it on your boats CD player. You aren't gaining any noticable performance either way.

These thru-hull discussions always sound like and all or nothing scenario. Aren't there mufflers that can be added so you get the nice throaty V8 rumble but it's not ridiculously loud?

BTW...I agree that straight pipes are annoying as hell.

Ayuh,... For an Extremely Hefty Price... Extremely...

When I refit the tin barge from a 140hp to a 4.3l,.. I built mine own straight pipes outa 4, 1/2" SSteel pipe,...
Angled tip, welded flange, they Looked Cool as 'ell...
From about the 2nd day of runnin' it, I've been redesigning, refitting,+ rebuilding 'em...
I'm up to about experimental model 17 or so now...
They look Stupid, but are are Dead Quiet at idle, Trolling speeds..
Break over onto plane,+ she still has her Bark though....

The refit I'm doing now will have some sorta water-lifts on it,.. If I can find the space...
Otherwise, they'll be straight, exiting below waterlevel...

If I were to put through transom exhaust on my boat, which would be completely retarded, I would make the pipes come out as far below the water line as possible. That way, it would be quiet until on plane.

Re: through transom exhaust w/mercruiser I/O

My new boat to me anyhow has through hull on twins. Really in all the boats I have had with the exception of outboards have had through hulls. I have been thinking if I am going to want to quiet it down a little by adding some in line mufflers they are angled but it has been crossing my mind. Can someone point me in the direction of water lifts and maybe how they work?
