Thowing a rod is bad.. it can damage pretty much everything in the block including putting the rod throught the side of the block..<br /><br />your crank can and probably does need replacing, your block can either have a hole in it, or cracks or other damage..<br /><br />damaged bores, pistons... take your pink.. throwing a rod leaves a stong piece of metal moving at very high speed swinging around in the motor, anything it can hit can be damaged.<br /><br />might be time to look for a 2nd hand powerhead.. but pull the old one down first, you might get lucky. If its bad, then its not worth fixing, find another powerhead.<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Frank

On the other hand, it is possible to throw a rod and have little to no damage, this is more likely if the engine was shutdown quickly. <br /><br />What makes you think you have a thrown rod? Does it have compression?

The older Johnsons & Rudes in the late 60s, and early 70s were notorious for throwing rods. Stay away from em if you can.

I heard that from the late 60's to 1972, Johnson used an electric shift solenoid which is now obsolete - if it goes, you can't find a new one? Also, your mention of the early OMC engines being likely to throw rods - I am looking at a 1975 Power Shift model, and I wonder if this is 1) likely to throw a rod and 2) also an electric shift solenoid type (thought they stopped producing them in 1972) - Anyone know anything?

Hey Down South, what kind of swamp water you drinkin'? You ain't that far south of me, and I can probably carry at one time all the the JohnRudes I've seen with a thrown rods from the<br />'60s and '70s. My 1963 18 Johnson runs great, as well as it ever did. There were certainly no major problem engines outside of the 1960 40hp-it had a lot of problems. I was out in the field for Johnson from 1971 to 1976, and in a dealership for 16 years before that, the only problems we had was the gas crisis in '74, and the fact OMC had nearly 75% of the outboard market.<br />Backfire

Hi Backfire, <br />The swamp water I'm drinking tonight is great. Bout bedtime though. No, really back in the late 60s and early 70s Johnson and Rude motors around here we had a lot of problems with the 50s. (This was in the mid 70s we had the problems. The motors were several years old) I had several friends that had em and seems like just about every one of them wound up throwing rods. We even ran a new one in a test tank once and BFK. It just stays in my memory, what's left of it. I dunno, Maybe the problem was just around here or maybe my buddies back then were mixing beer instead of oil in the gas. One thing I know though, I never forgot it. I must have seen at least six or seven go in a short period of time and heard about many more.<br />One of my buddies back then had a shop. The graveyard behind his shop had a bunch of em in it.<br />Anyway, Billy Bob knows where one is cheap, And guess what, It slung a rod.

For a 1975 Johnson 50 should I be scared to get it. I know the best chain saws and mowers I have had were vintage, and I'd be tickled if I got that 50 for $350 and it ran right - good old 2 stroke. How about it, would you guys buy it if it looked clean - even has the cables and controls.

Billy Bob,<br /><br />The 1975 has "Powershift 2". It does NOT have electric shift.
