last time i had my boat out, i had been out runnin for over a hour - and all of a sudden, clankety clankety, and loss of power - so i shut it down and a guy pulled me in..

i get it home, and hook up earmuffs, and it starts up easy enough.. but there is a slapping sound coming from the top side, i gassed it, and it is still there, but doesnt get any worse.. not on every rotation, but alot.. my novice guess is a rod is slapping around in there.. knowing a little about 2 strokes, i now there arent allot of moving parts invlolved, so thats my guess by the sound its making..

i am gonna do a compression check to see if that tells the story, but i have found a powerhead that might fit for a price i might be willing to pay.. heres the question

if have a 1982 mercury 50hp 4 cylinder .. i found a 1985 mercury 50 hp 4 cylinder powerhead.. this powerhead for saleis missing some of the electronics, but that all works fine on my 82. if not 85, are there any years at all that will work, or just 82? thanks allot folks

Parts will fit... Make sure engine is in rpm range, lugging is uaually what kills these engines..

well, i only have a 11p prop on it, and i wasnt runnint 100%, i usually run about 80% throttle when cruising.. i dont have a tach, but i dont feel it is lugging.. not sure..

but will the 85 powerhead fit? i think i am going to repair or replace the motor and sell the whole rig for one with a 100+ hp anyways, so mostly i just want to get it back into good order for as little as possible.. the experiment was a success - i bought this rig to see if i was 'in' to boating - we have had a awesome time on it this summer - but i want something faster anyways..

edit ** when u say parts will fit, do you mean some it is the same, some isnt? are the block components the same? or do you mean something different?

thanks again

Understand this. If it's over-propped, that is the engine cannot achieve the recommended rpm at WOT, then it is overloaded at all speeds. The engine is running more torque and less rpm for any particular fuel input, and will tend to overheat and break things.

i get that, but i have the smallest prop hustler sells for my motor, also, its the prop suggested by a prop calculator, and other iboats forum readers - so again folks, if we can get past that - i'm more interested in fixing it then arguing prop tuning.. no offense, but the prop is the least of my current worries..

The 1985 model 50hp powerhead will fit ..

Direct bolt on with little to no changes, any change will be in way fuel lines are routed due to fuel pump/filter styles and locations..
but the prop is the least of my current worries

With no tach you cant use a prop calculator as you dont know RPM to plug in.. to small a prop will allow engine to "over rev" which may have caused your failure.

thanks for the info, interesting you say i cant use a calculator without a tach, i thought the whole purpose of the calculators was so you didnt need a tach, in fact on both the hustler and mercury calculators, neither have a place to enter a rpm reading..

you are correct i might have been redlining, again though i was only running about 80% throttle, shouldnt have been anywhere near redline - i think sometimes things just wear out.. either way i need to get it fixed - i think i will buy that 85 tomorrow.. thanks.
