Thru Deck Fuel fittings Question

I am continuing to make progress on my stringer/deck replacement. Stringers are glassed and I am finalizing things for the deck.

I am going out of my way to assure water will not get below my new deck. One of the concerns I have is the fuel fill and vent lines that run through the deck. This seems like a possible problem. My initial plan was to do what I have seem on the site...run epoxied PVC pipe through the deck. It would seem a better solution to have a "thru deck fitting" with male barbs on both sides which is screw into the deck and sealed with 5200. That would avoid a flexible/leaky hose runing through the deck. Seems like a much 'cleaner' install

I would need ones for the fill, vent and feed. Does anyone know if these fittings exist and if so what they are called and where I can get them?

one of the things about boat building, is that we all tend to over think about things......and that leads to over complicating things.

water IS going to get below the deck......count on it! that way you cam build the boat as if the water is supposed to be in there and when it does happen you are ahead of the game.

one of the best ways to fight below decks rot is to add vent holes so that any water can evaporate.

pvc pipe is a great solution in your situation, and just cap it off with foam rubber or somthing removable. (incase a line needs to be replaced.

There are waterproof bulkhead fittings. You might try Fastenal. I've installed (USNR) them on ships up to two inch i.d.. You could also use two abs couplings and a short piece of pipe. Cut the pipe just shy of whats needed so when you put it together you end up with the deck sandwiched tight between the two couplings. Use plumber putty to seal around the hoses and you'll be done. The plumbers putty will hold back anything short of a pressure washer and it never hardens completely so it can move with the hoses and will remain sealed. There's a lot of Navy ships maintaining water tight integrity with plumbers putty so yes, it will do the job.

Great thought on the plumbers puddy. I have started to find some "bulkhead" fittings that look like they would work.

I assume the newer boats all have these types of fittings particularly will gelcoat decks. Anyone out there have them in there boat?

Would you guys use PVC for fuel or do I need to stick with metal?

you could also try what is called a witches hat that is used to seal conduit on rubber roofs. Look up dektite brand pipe flashings, this is what I am going to use, along with either plumbers putty or duct seal. THe flashing can be cut to whatever size you wish and can be sealed to the pipe with epoxy and a stainless hose clamp.

THe flashing can be cut to whatever size you wish and can be sealed to the pipe with epoxy and a stainless hose clamp.

The trade name for those is Roof Safe if you go to HD you can get them but they also sell a rubber adapter/seal that's used to make one size Roof Safe work with several different pipe sizes. That might be all you really need.
