I'm going to install a brass thru hull fitting below water line in the transom. I know that there is surpose to be a "bedding" which is like a plumbers putty. Is this bedding the same as plumbers putty? Would it be okay to use plumbers putty?

After installation, I plan to run a bead of silicone around it as well.

Thanks......

Re: Thru Hull Fitting ?

Ditto Ralph’s suggestion, 3M 5200 is all you need. Inside the hull isn’t a ‘bedding’ as much as a reinforcing block. Epoxy a block of wood for the thru-hull’s mounting screws to seat into and to distribute the stress on the fiberglass. Also, on the inboard side of the thru-hull the only thing that attaches immediately to it is a value. 1/4-turn ball valve is preferred and it must always be immediately accessible.

Okay, what the heck is this 3M 5200? I don't have a marine store within a short distance of me. Adhesive sealant I know. But what makes this stuff so special?

Put it this way, what was used before 3M5200 was invented?

I have a brass ball valve for the fitting below the water line.

The other fittings that are above the water line have a re-enforcement block behind them. There was plastic ones that I'm replaceing with brass. Those had like a plumbers putty behind them. It wasn't hard, but yet it was still plyable (sp). That is why I was asking about the putty. I read on the box of the thru hull fittings that a bedding compound should be used. However I don't want to pay 40 some bucks for just a little bit that I need.

Thanks.

3M 5200 is like sealant and glue combined It is made to last a very long time, seal extremely well, and take a beating.

Using cheaper materials for sealing a hole in the hull could send the entire boat to the bottom and well, that's no fun!

Got a wal-mart or k-mart nearby, Mayfloat?... They may have 5200 in the sporting goods/boating stuff section... ;)

Re: Thru Hull Fitting ?

Cool, thanks Ralph for the link and the rest of ya for suggesting the product. I think there is going to be a service call tomorrow that is going to take me by a marina. :) I hope they have the fast cure 5200, if not, I just may have to wait for the regular to cure. Heck we still have snow on the ground from Saturday :( Surpose to be 70 tomorrow, it will be gone. :D

Thanks again.....
