I'm building a modified 4 cylindergarden tractor, for pulling a 6500 lbs sled. I want to use a 2 stroke engine, but want to be different from everyone else. The class rules limate the 2 strokes to 1500cc vs. 2300cc for 4 strokes.
The class is loaded with mulity snowmobile engines tied together to get near the 1500cc mark, But I have yet to see anything using a marine 2 stroke.
I was wondering just what would need to be done to the flywheel and crankshaft in order for them to live a semi-happy life? I know carbs and intake would have to be repostioned. That's not a problem, but I was wondering about a thrust washer/bearing because of a side load? maybe a balanced flywheel or crankshaft?
When U stop to think about all the limates placed on any given outboard (stock) as a mechcanic the two areas that chock this system the most are rpm limates and exhuast system designe. yet they are still making impressive horsepower and torque. Have you ever sat down to compare the piston size of a say 340 snowmobile making 40hp and that of a say, johnson 40hp. thier is a diferance in size? If you have any opinon I would greatly except it. If you know of a person or place that I could get answers from I would be thankfull.

You'll also have to figure how to rig a water pump and where to put that Caterpillar radiator.

If the race is short enough, you can do like the drag boys do and not use a radiator, just a tank of water and a small circulating pump.

A 3 cyl Merc 90 comes in at 1386 cc and with 3 cyls (the more the better) you don't need a big flywheel for smoothness.

As far as lateral support you ought to be able to rig a pillowblock type bearing on the drive shaft near the motor and tie it to the same frame the motor is tied to for rigidity and alighnment; or 2 of them if the shaft is long.

My 2c,

Mark
