Once again I come humbly to the panel for help! Getting a loud noise that is in time with the rpms. Narrowed it down to the transom area (either gimbal or ujoint. Took the outdrive off ran the motor and no noise. Did a simple fingers in the gimbal and did a few turns and no noise, and didn't feel any resistance. The u joint looks ok no noticable damage. Bellows didn't appear to have any water. So before I put this back together is there anything I should double check?

Is the gimbal bearing smooth as silk, no roughness at all?

If its smooth look close at the engine coupler, can it be moved?

That is the next inboard ring that that outshaft goes into? I'm guessing check that from the inside?

You never mention if this noise is related to turning as well? PS may be your issue? Please get manual to look up these parts/names. Having knowledge of them will help you out in the long run. Trust me! Did you examine OD's lube????? Get a spline/coupler alignment tool and check engine coupler for alignment, AND after spinning motor over 180 degrees. Perhaps something (stringer or transom) has sagged and hard to see. Also, make sure (difficult), if alignment is off, that the flywheel or coupler has not come loose. You might be able to insert crow bar and try to put pressure on coupler. Almost impossible on my bravos. Lack of room... You will need an OD mount/stand or a place to rest OD. Put into gear and have friend lock down prop spline (vise grips work pretty well or have him hold prop stationary with wood block) so it does not easily move. On the u-joint end insert large screw driver into u-joints and later yoke and apply pressure and look for movement on u-joints or yoke. Sometimes the 4 ends of a u-joint don't get grease into them. It has happened to me on a truck. If no movement, then check for roughness within OD as you rotate drive spline. You might have an OD having issues. Water in bearings don't play together well.

When the od is hooked up the sound is constant...up down left and right. Increases and decreases with the rpms. At first I thought I had a rod or a lifter knocking but when I removed the od it was purring. When I had it in the water last I leaned over the transom and the noise was right inside it. I rotated the bearing and it was smooth. The ujoint looked ok didn't see anything gross and obvious. Put a little grease on the joints. I'm going to put it back together this afternoon but wanted to see if there was anything else I should look at while it's apart. Alldodge suggested looking at the coupler so I'll give that a feel. I will add that I was running the trim higher and faster than recommended due to being in shallow water ( and still learning). Is there any way that bearing could have gotten out of place?

Not normally, unless the outer races can be moved (bearing is press fit). If the race can move then the bearing will slip

Pop the top cap off the drive and inspect the gear set there. Then replace the u-joints.

Replaced the u joints and a quick test send to have fixed the issue. Will know better next time I take it out. Thank you again.
