Re: Thunderbolt IV Spark Advance
Tony, just my .02 worth.
I have been following your posts since before you bought the Grady. I thought that I had read that you installed new wires, I see that I was mistaken.
My thoughts center around cam timing and or slippage on the harmonic balancer. If this engine is so equipped.

NOTE: A way to check the engine timing w/o a light, is to observe the electrode on the sparkplug, there should be a burn line, (distinct color change) at the curve portion of the electrode).

I believe you mentioned and was varified by DonS just what this engine is, and that the original owner attested to the fact that it 'never' did rev, (under load), past 3200 rpm. some of the timing chain gears are adjustable. Perhaps a degree wheel could help verify your cam timing w/o opening up the engine. Just a thought. Also, in my 'early days' (when I had a full head of hair), I read in popular mechanics that..."97% of engine problems are electrical". food for thought.
Now, with all of that being said, I have to ask you what I'd ask my 20 year old son, "are you sure that it's not a loose nut behind the wheel"?

I wish you the best...I'm confident that you will post the soulition to this saga when it is discovered.
I'll go read my book now and check on this tomorrow....sl
