Hi, I'm running a 2004 Evinrude 135 outboard. Yesterday I got a clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, thunk instead of the usual thunk while shifting into gear. This happened several times and other times it just gave the usual thunk. What might the problem be?

shifting should be a swift deliberate move, not a slow move. if you move the shifter slowly the clutch dog, and gear do not engage as they should. it is not a sychronised transmission.

I learned exactly what Tashasdaddy said right on this forum and right from him.

And if you continue to shift improperly you will get clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, all the time because you have destroyed your clutch dog and gear (s). At that time, you will have to mortgage the family farm to fix it.
