Sasto:

You have an engine with a flat tappet cam (not roller). Make SURE you don't use an "energy efficient" oil, as the feds have removed the zinc from that oil. The zinc compound additive protects cams from wear, as the highest shear load in an engine is the camshaft/tappet interface.

Tell me more about it.....Aloysius.....what would be the oil you would use in this motor if she was yours?..thanks for the info.

Personally, I use a 15w-40 'all fleet" I get from Bennetts auto--packed for them by Valvoline. Basically a diesel engine oil. Last time I checked the Valvoline website, it had zinc in it.

the zinc was removed because most new engines are roller followers or lifters, and the zinc was fouling the catalytic converters.

She is an oldie....Fireman431..:) .I took your advice and before we left for an adventure today... I added some "motor honey" to the motor.... and after 5 seconds.... which used to take 15 minutes... she purred and was silent the rest of the day. I figure on replacing her someday...but not sooner than I have to.

Going to take dubs advice on changing to a better grade of oil with more viscocity.

Thanks guys... for the advice. :D

Mike

Glad it worked for you. It worked great for me. All I really DIDN'T want to hear is that you added it and 5 seconds later the motor seized up!

Get a little thicker oil and I'm sure you get many more years of service...or you'll change out lifters. Either way, it's cheaper than a new engine!

It's a Chrysler thing.
My Dodge truck does it too.
If you use a 1/2 quart of rislone it will quiet it down as well and get rid of any sludge.
I use it from time to time.

I would do the straight 30 weight diesel oil,Rotella or Delvac is what i used to use.It may very well solve the problem too instead of the motor honey.
Plus it is the type of oil that the motor calls for.;)

I use the Delvac 30 in a diesel and have plenty on hand. If you think it is my best choice.. I would like to use it.

I cranked her up again after an overnight rest and still no peep. I wonder how many hours I can get from this motor. She has 1300 on her now. Our other boat with diesels has 1600 and just broke in.

If the oil you're using is low on zinc, you could use a zinc additive called ZDDP to your oil.

Glad to hear you ar not opposed to a replacement if she blows because at that point you won't have a choice. Why wait? Try to fix it now and save yourself a lot of money.

I understand your point..sethjon. The boat is for the Admiral and she has 1300 hrs. on the motor. I would rather buy a short block than do any major repair at this point.....I think..... If for any reason I need to remove the motor, I would rather replace her. But another motor dosen't always solve everything either. I have installed many motors in boats, but know little about internal repairs. Thanks for your concern and imput.
