Hello all.

I was just thinking about something that i noticed last time i ran my engine, but first let me give you the details.
Freshly rebuilt Mercruiser 140 rebuilt by me honed bored and head remand by the pros engine runs fine but water in oil which i have narrowed down to two things 1.manifold and riser 2. me forgetting to put sealant on the head bolts (not sure how big of a problem that is).

So now the problem, it didnt do this at first i think it started after water entered the oil but after shutting down the engine i hear a ticking noise which i believe is coming from the lifters it have yet to count how many times i hear it cuz i have yet to determine the water leak, is this more then likely the problem? and if so why would water in the oil cause this?

P.s. any info on sealant on head bolts would be nice (save me a couple hundred on a manifold)
1972 Mercruiser 140 mc-1

Thanks Ryan

Use Permatex Aviation sealant on the head bolts.

Ticking, could be a lifter or mis-adjusted lifter. Possibly the exhaust shutter. Use a piece of heater hose to your ear or a mechanics stethoscope to find the noise.

Hey fishrdan, he claims the ticking "after shutting down". I assume turning the engine off.

As far as why water in oil would cause a noise? Because it don't belong there!!!!!~

Whoops, i read too fast. Forget the lifter or shutters causing the ticking if the noise is heard with the engine off.

water in oil VS ticking noise. and???? fix the water in oil issue. then worry about any ticking noise thats happening after the engine is shut down. Just might be, that the ticking noise goes away after you solve the MAJOR issue....

ok ya so ill look into that sealant where do you recommend the best place to get it? and sound is more of: tick tick tick tick.... it'l do like 5-7 ticks but ill bet its the lifters but ill check once all the water is out of the oil ill be draining it sometime soon (i wanted to wail till all the oil water mixture settled so that i could flush it with some left over clean oil i have and get it out as easily as possible) also you said something about maladjusted lifters how would you adjust a lifter?

Thanks Ryan

Re: Ticking noise merc 140

so is it ticking while running or when you shut it down??

running = probably lifter/misadjusted rocker arm - could also be from water logged/aerated oil causing lifter(s) to loose compression

shut down = the block/head cooling rapidly (like the ticking exhaust on an auto) - look to ecess water somewhere (unseald threads on your head bolts perhaps)

I am having the same problem with my 72 mercruiser 140. Engine ticks after shut down or even just after turning engine over. I also had water in oil due to a cracked manifold. Water intrusion problem is fixed but engine ticks every time I shut down. I was hoping ya found a solution to your problem Ryan or if anyone has any input, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Try running extra oil thru the engine to kida flush it cause i tink now that i got it fixed otherwise u might need knew lifters or take a wire bottle brush to clean out any rust you might have in the lifter holes

Sounds good. I've flushed twice with fresh oil. I think I'm going to try to swap out the lifters. Thanks for the quick reply. The advice is much appreciated.
